So the lag TSB didn't show up so I went with the K&N drop in to see if it would help. Man what a difference. I barely hit the gas yesterday and I peeled out. The lag is completely gone especially off the line and in high speeds when I need to merge or pass. A big hellz yeah! to K&N. One question though the Sales Manager at Toyota said to stay away from the cold- air intake set-up and go with the drop in. Why?

I think it's because dealers hate aftermarket parts.

Short Ram for a street driven car will suck in too much hot air from the engine from off the line in which will make you loose more torque and hp. . . On the highway it should be better since more air is entering the engine. . . That is why the cold air is better because the filter is on the outside sucking in cold air instead of the engine compartment air

Got it. Thanks man I'll just stick with my drop-in for now, but the cold-air sounds good.

Wow, I want what you're taking. :D Well, whatever you gotta do to get rid of the lag. Hmmm, I saw almost no change from the K&N filter but a big change from the TSB lag fix. The TSB doesn't show up, you just tell the dealer you've experienced the things the TSB says it fixes and you ask that they apply it. I guess you don't need it now though.

FWIW, I thought that having an open intake like that increases the chance (albeit still remote) of water being introduced into the engine.

Ditto. Its just an air filter, I'm waitin to get the Injen intake and quite possibly a custom dual exhaust setup. (My cousin bought a rear-ended red Gen 2 and is in talks with a welder friend of ours...keep your fingers crossed..

If the cold air intake hangs low enough and you drive through water deep enough to completely submerge the filter then yeah, thats correct. All in all, any intake, short ram or cai, isnt going to give you the numbers the companies over-estimate to begin with. (However, IMO it is worth it if you are boosted.) Stick with the drop-in... the last air filter you'll buy.

Check out my CAI. I've never had any problems, even going over puddles. You only have to worry if the filter gets submerged in water. If you think about it, you would pretty much have to drive into a lake for anything to happen.

The drop in should add about the same as the Injen. i measured my OEM airbox ports and after 3000rpm (or before w/ the DocJohn trick) you have the equivalent of a 3" pipe. So the filter is the only improvement. Actually, OEM has a little more area w/ the two ports open. Concentrate on the headers if you want real power. That's our choke point. (exh might help some tho)

Will the fuel injection computer change the mixture if you really started to flow a lot more air? Or would it just lean it out even further?
