Still need the cap?

Hey guys, first post here. Been snoopin around for a while and I really appreciate all the useful information on the boards. Anyways, I have an odd question...

Been working on a sound system for the past few months in my car. At the first install I had a capacitor (1 farad) installed. Later on, I upgraded my battery (after the original almost died on me) to a red top. And just a week ago I got a 200amp alternator installed. Boy did that cost a pretty penny, *sigh*. Anyways, I still have the capacitor hooked up to my sub amp (500W RMS x2 @2ohms). It's somewhat of an eyesore since many say cap's are a waste of money and it's taking up space in my trunk.

Should I have the capacitor taken out?

FYI: Inside I have 4 channel amp putting out 100W RMS x4 @4ohms.

IMO I feel that they are unneccesary, especially a 1 farad cap. Have you done the big 3 yet?

If you've got a H.O. Alternator, the Big 3 done, and a good battery, then you should be fine.

Make sure you discharge that cap.

You didn't need a cap in the first place. That 200amp alternator is extreme overkill for your system, you could be running about 3000wrms off of that beast. Where did you get that alt btw?

Whats an H.O. alternator and how much does it cost? Also, what wires can be used in teh big 3? It wasen't explained on the forum. Thanks!

Oh, and would I need a cap with 2 900 watt speakers and a 2100 watt amp or could I do the big 3 and a new alternator? I wanted to get a 20 farad cap plus have the big 3 done instead of getting a whole new alternator.

H.O. = High Output.

Instead of spending money on a cap, spend it on a stronger alternator, Big 3 wiring, stronger batteries made for car audio systems. Then after you've done all the neccesary upgrade's and you still have dimming problems(Which you won't if you get a strong enough alternator) maybe look into getting a Batcap. http://www.batcap.net/

Most people prefer two good batteries however.

I like Odyssey/Stinger/Hawker Batteries. The Stinger SP1000 is a good choice. You don't need to extend/replace your battery cables as you would with an Optima Yellow, because the terminals are in the same location as the factory locations.
