Amp Kits and Wiring Question

Postby SolaraLance » Sun May 29, 2005 10:41 pm

Okay, just to start off I really don't know a lot about wiring kits and really anything besides more watts = more sound. Okay, my problem is that currently I have 2 audiobahn 12's with a peak of about 1600w running off a 1200w 2 channel amp and 1200w wiring kit. Everything's all good with that. Problem is I just ordered a new 15" Solo-baric (2000w peak) and an 1800w mono kenwood to push it. The wiring I currently use is 4-gauge that's handling 1200w (or at least that's what it's rated), so I need to upgrade the wiring to handle up to the 1800w of the amp. Question is would I be better off just buying 0-gauge and replacing the wires or should I just buy a brand new 0-gauge amp kit. I have a 1.2 farad cap running on the 4-gauge setup and I don't want to have to replace that if I replace the wires? Any opinions?

4 gauge supports up to 600 watts i think.
So 0 gauge is the only way to go.
Yeah a whole new 0 gauge amp kit would be safest.
Cause if you have 4 gauge then 0 gauge that wouldn't let you amp run every effiecent.
What are you doin'?? Goin' to shake the whole city.

I'm just a showoff pretty much, was gonna throw some money into the engine but I'm plannin on buyin a hayabusa soon so no point in having a fast car if I have one of those. I think I'll probably end up buying a brand new 0-gauge kit if the 4-gauge I have right now doesn't measure up to what I want. If I do that it means I probably have to upgrade to a 2 farad cap or buy a H.O. alt, since I'm still running stock alt w/ some older battery (might have to buy a yellow-top optima as well). This will be my 3rd system upgrade in the past year, the guys at Circuit City love me.

Max wattage means nothing. Half the time those numbers are highly overrated.

But it sounds like from the equipment you bought, you will need a 1/0 gauge power and ground wire. Also make sure to match the inline fuse amp rating with that of the Kenwood amp. Make sure to have the inline fuse less than 18 inches inline from the positve terminal on your battery.

Use the old 4 gauge wiring for another amp to power some interior speakers, or if that is not going to happen use the wiring, to upgrade the "Big 3" wiring if you haven't done that yet.

http://forum.sounddomain.com/ubb/ultima ... 5;t=007801

You will have to buy some 4 gauge ring terminals and maybe also upgraded battery terminals to accept the extra wiring.

Also look into an upgraded battery such as an Odyssey PCJ1200MJT or a stinger sp1000

If you still have dimming the next step would be a Stronger alternator that is built for the use of strong audio systems. Excessive Amperage makes high quality affordable alternators.

1800 watts peak means a maximum of 900 watts rms. 4awg is enough, but if you can get bigger go for it. You wont need to replace anything but the power/ground wires as long as your speaker wire is 14awg or bigger.
Nascar would be a sport if half the cars were driving the other direction.
