Converter Smell (Sulfer)

Postby PhreakdOut » Tue Apr 05, 2005 7:10 pm

FYI to all, (I know this should be a topic of it's own)

Toyota recently has had issues with a sulfer (rotten egg) smell with their converters. While this is usually originating from the gas you buy, somehow Toyota has linked the substrate loading and washcoat to be contributing factors.

To my knowledge, no recall has been made no has a publicly acknowledged TSB been issued. All I know is that every converter we make for service parts has had the converter changed to fix this issue. (Special service part numbers.)

Check with your dealer about this issue and see if they have a field fix part number for your front pipe. I'll check with Toyota's purchasing group to see what that part number is.

This should be convered under your emissions warranty of 7/70K.

Feel free to send me a message if you have problems.

Rotten egg smell, hmmm. I only get that every morning after driving it about two miles when going to work. Then it goes away totally till the next morning. Doesn't matter if I accelerate alot or drive conservatively and only lasts a short time (couple minutes). Anyone else having this regular behavior? Should I get this looked at?

Yeah... there's threads on that. Usually just when gunning it. But I swear there was a TSB... but maybe I'm thinking G1. Check Edmunds if you have it bad. Mine's only when I get to 4500+ RPM.
