Thanks for that info, Vic. Nice bedside manner by the way.

1. The tire pressure monitor system in the gen 2 Solara DOES NOT sense air pressure in the spare.

2. The tire pressure monitor system in the gen 2 Solara DOES NOT actually sense tire pressures at all, but instead senses rotational rates in each of the 4 wheels. This is known as an indirect tire pressure indicator (TPI) system. If one tire has a lower pressure than the others it will have a slightly faster wheel rotational rate and trip the “pressure” warning indicator light.

Are you sure about that? I believe its quite opposite actually - ie direct. Look at toyota's diag tool - for every tire [not sure about the spare] the computer gets fed temp, tire position [on car], psi, and rpm. - if either is messed up, it trips the light.

Cheers, Vic

Okay Vic, I’ll try this one more time.... the GEN 2 has an INDIRECT TPI. It DOES NOT actually sense tire air pressures (PSI)! Nothing you have said proves otherwise and in fact only supports this is an INDIRECT system. Page 132 of the owners manual also says NOTHING to the contrary.

You have NOT answered my question.... HOW does the TPI in the GEN 2 sense actual TIRE PRESSURE (PSI)?!?!

I have reviewed the specific WIRING and DIAGNOSTIC DIAGRAMS for the TPI system in the GEN 2 in the FACTORY SERVICE MANUAL (Vol. 1) and the ELECTRICAL WIRING DIAGRAM (Pub. No. EWD554U). There are NO pressure (PSI) sensors for the tires. The TPI system senses wheel rotational rates through the 4 sensors (one for each brake rotor) that are also used by the ABS system.

I have AFTERMARKET WHEELS and tires. I installed them myself and there are NO pressure sensors in them, and my TPI still works fine if one of my tires has low pressure. WHY? Because its an INDIRECT SYSTEM!
I have REMOVED MY SPARE TIRE from the trunk and driven for 2 days with NO fault indication on the TPI. WHY? Because there are NO PSI sensors in ANY of the wheels.

So there’s my PROOF. I can post the manual pages I cited here if needed. Your turn now...

I see what you are saying. No need to get all hostile

Some other toyota vehicles use direct system [tacoma is one of them i think] - i the diag tool shows PSI for every tire as read by computer. I was under the impression toyota uses same system in all vehicles, but i guess not.

Regardless of the technology, point is, the system has to be properly reset for the light to stay off - which most people have issues with.

Happy st patricks - NYC is insane today :)

Sorry, didn't intend to be hostile.
You are correct when you say: "Some other toyota vehicles use direct system [tacoma is one of them i think] - i the diag tool shows PSI for every tire as read by computer", and yes, "the system has to be properly reset for the light to stay off".
Happy St. Patrick's day. Have some green beer in NYC for me. :drinking:

eh? i thought the sensor thing has been discussed long time ago...
there is no "sensor" or "transimter" inside of tires...
i though there was a sensor inside of the tire, but some guy in this forum corrected me.

it's some photo-sensor locate near brake, and it will keep tracking tires' motion.
light comes up with one tire is constantly rotating at different speed than others.

i forget the detail, but i'm sure it's something like that.

anwyay, i found out how to re-initiallize the sensor.
keep the engine one with shift on P.
keep pressing reset button ontil the sensor blink 3 times with each 1sec delay on each blinking.
