Drill Free Removable Front License Plate Assembly for Gen2

Postby L.A.solaraman » Tue Mar 15, 2005 6:25 pm

Hey everyone,

Well, I live in SoCal, and I had a bit of a problem... I kept on getting parking tickets for not having a front license plate. I think front license plates look terrible and take away from the beauty of my solara. However, the California Vehicle code states that you must have a front license plate. It is more of an issue when you are parked, but I have been pulled over while driving for no plate.

I designed and modified a plate assembly that hooks on under the hood of the car and can be easily put on and off with the opening of the hood. The plate and assembly cannot be removed unless the hood is opened (so it cannot be stolen), and you can drive with the plate on without it damaging the car or coming off.

The best feature is that it does not require ANY holes to be drilled, and it keeps the clean look of the car when you take it off. When I park outside, I simply pop the hood and slip the plate into place so I don't get a ticket. The best part it, that it is totally legal!

If enough people are interested in this item, I may start making them and having them available for purchase - similar to how Michael T did it with his grill inserts. I will take pics soon and post them if there is interest.

I'm just a regular solaraguy who came up with a decent idea that I wanted to share with you guys.

Thanks all - drive safe.

Good point... It won't work if you have Mike T's grille, and I almost never drive around with it on. But if you do not have Mike's grille, and don't have or want to have a permanent front plate (with holes drilled into your bumper), then it should work out great for you.

You're right, it is higher than normal, but it is mainly for parking purposes, even though I drove over 100mph to test it out, and it stayed firmly in place. I showed the plate assembly to the cop who wrote off my tickets (I still had to pay for them!!), and he said it was still at a legal height, and good idea. He even told me that if I get pulled over when its off, to just tell the cop that I took it off to wash the car/ maintenance/ etc. and just show the cop and put it on if he/she wants.

I keep it in the trunk or on the floor of the backseat when I'm driving.

But the main thing is that there was NO WAY that I was going to drill holes in my front bumper for the regular front plate assembly!... and I couldn't afford to keep getting parking tickets for not having a front plate!

wait, you didn't have the front plate already on the car when you bought it? Cuz, I have 2 holes on my front bumper, after taking off the front plate that the dealer put on.

I live in Socal, but I bought the car in Nevada, and the dealer there did not put the front plate on the car, so I don't have the holes drilled into my bumper.

I know it does'nt look that great, but its better than having to drill holes into my bumper!... and its really easy to put on and take off.

Me 2. The car will have a front plate as long as it's in IL so I'll never see the holes. (and it looks better than sitting on top of the grille I think.)
