First Oil Change- Dealership or Other?

First Oil Change- Dealership or Other?

Postby Katherine » Thu Mar 10, 2005 5:35 pm

Hi All,

I'm at 4300 miles and already the maintenance light is blinking... So I guess it's time for an oil change. I guess this is stupid but, should I go to the Toyota dealership or somewhere else? I know they are more expensive. I got a coupon for $26.95 oil change (doesn't include tire rotation :( ). I read some of you had coupons for a lower amount... Anyway, is it weird that the light is blinking before 5K miles??

Thanks :)

its not weird. thats the way they made it. The better question is if you do your own oil change how do you reset the light? I had mine done at Toyota and never really asked them.

I heard you hold down the Trip button and set the engine to "On" in order to shut off the light...

If you take the car to the dealer, they will treat you better when you have big warranty problems.

It's up to you though...

That's one expensive oil change lol... ours are $25 (up to 5 qts)

Local Toyota dealership coupons for oil changes are between $14.95 - $23.95 here in KY.

For my first oil change i took it to the dealer but after that i take it to my friend's autoshop for an oil change, because you never really know how they do it over there in the dealership. Service is nice...like a free car wash and stuff for my dealer, but yea. To reset the servce light you press and hold the odometer switch and you turn the key to switch on.

Oil that came with your new car contained certain additives to make the oil last longer (as some cars sit on lots for a while) and purpose is to make the engine 'broken in'; normal oil the purpose is lubrication. FYI: i have always assumed the first oil change is free from the dealership you bought the car...but i guess this is probably cus i ask for it when i buy new cars?? local shop would charge you anywhere from 20+tax; if the 26something included tax, i'd say go for it..it is expensive..but you will be treated nicely when your car comes in later for warranty/major service schedules.

Some dealers include first oil changes, some don't. It's not required by Toyota. Our dealership has a new owner's seminar (Lexus and Toyota/Scion). There, all Toyota/Scion buyers receive one free oil change and a (I think) a small gift bag w/ random car care stuff. The Lexus one doesn't have a coupon for an oil change because Lexus includes the first oil change. Random certificates for future services are raffled off (oil changes, 15K services, etc) along side bigger gift bags (car wash supplies, tool sets, etc).

Easiest way to rate a Toyota dealer (assuming it's been around for a while). If they have a Lexus store, they are a good dealer. I think only 10% of applicants for a Lexus dealer got the privelege... You can't just buy a Lexus dealer like you can a Toyota dealer ;-) You need a proven track record.

The Lexus are designed to go on after X time period, so I'm assuming the Toyotas are also programmed the same way.
