new body kit help

Postby cablemn » Wed Mar 02, 2005 3:40 pm

I recently aquired an oem body kit for my solara sle. I noticed there are tabs that look like they fit into slots in the front and rear bumpers. does anyone have any clues as to an easy way to make these cuts, and whatever else i would need to get this install going? This is the stock kit from a solara sport model. Any help would be appreciated.

Where did you get the kit? I've been looking for one for my SLE too. As for installation, I'm no help because I just got the Solara last week.

I got the kit from the stand-up guy in the post above me. I think i'll let my body shop guy put them on. I dont want to Fk it up. The side skirts will be easy, you remove the ones that are there and replace it with the bigger skirt. No tabs or slots. Its the front and rear lips that are slotted. The tabs are located every few inches at the top of the lip they the piece is screwed to the car under the body where the bumper covers are attached.

 I am still looking for a kit. Now that I have the mud guards though, can't use the side skirts. I wonder how just the front and rear would look? Cableman be sure to post pics when it's done.

I would like just the front pieces. Jewls, you can't use the rear skirts unless you take off your rear mud guards.

I honestly HATE the rear skirts, They are dirt catchers. I only leave them on to make a pocket for my Muffler.

Heres an update on my quest for a SLE sport. I went to toyota today to talk with the parts guy about the installation of the oem kit. he knew nothing. In fact he said the only way you can get it is to buy the car with it on. That just doesnt make sense because if you wreck your car what happens? They turn your sport into an SLE? I made my point and he agreed. Then he finds a part number for an installation kit but it doesnt tell you what is included in the description. He was willing to sell it to me for the shop price of 30.00 so i went for it. It should be here tomorrow.
I'm hoping it comes with retaining clips and a template for the location of the slots that need to be cut for it. There are guides for the slots superimposed on the inside of the rear bumper but you still have to cut them out. There are no guides for the 2 front lips. For anyone whos interested i will update this thread as soon as i get the install kit.
BTW the toyota body shop didnt know a damn thing about this kit either. Scary right? Thats one place i'm not bringing my car if it needs work.

^^ Try crosslisting OEM bumpercovers for a sports model versus SLE; maybe the oem front and rear bumper covers are different (different in aspects sports have glides to accept a kit at the bottom - just a thought??).

We should nominate someone to break into the Solara Factory in Kentucky and steal a bunch of the body kits.

I need one in silver by the way.

It is kinda funny though, i mean, i can understand TDR taking a while to put a body kit into production, but these are already made, why dont they just sell them to the public? Its not like they would lose money if they didnt sell well...

Thats funny because when I stopped by a dealer the other day I picked up a 2005 Solara accessories brousure and on the back page it had a short list of those not pictured and ask your dealer for details and behold on that list was the ground effects kit.

Been there tried that. They only make one type of bumper cover.

Thats exactly where i found it. Today i called the parts counter to check if my install kit was in and i was told that it was DISCONTINUED!!!. The parts dude said he will call on monday to check whats going on. Even he said its ridiculous. He said they probably changed the order number or something. I hope thats the case. And the saga continues!

UPDATE....Took my car to my body guy today and showed him the oem body kit with the clips i found at the Toyota parts counter. He says he'll throw the whole kit on for $200.00. He also confirmed what i believed had to be done which is to remove the bumper covers completely, cut slots for the tabs on the kit, intsall them, then replace the bumper covers with the pieces already on. The sideskirts just seem to bolt right on using existing hardware. He said it will take him a couple of days with the car only because hes kind of busy and will do it between jobs. I agreed cause the price was right. I think he'll be done with it in a day. The car goes to him on monday the 21st. I should have it back on tues or weds. Then i'll post pics and know the answers to any questions on the installation.
