getting 30 miles per gallon

Postby slingshot » Fri Feb 04, 2005 9:26 am

Are you going by the gauge or number of miles divided by gallons. The gauge number is a little higher than the actual calculated mileage. I have the six cylinder and have gotten 34mpg using the gauge doing all highway. I guess real accurate was maybe just above 30.

Getting above 30 with your 4 means doing mostly highway miles, keeping steady speeds, and not accelerating as much as possible.

there are many factors as to how you can get your average mpg.

2 main factors are:

where are you driving? hwy? fwy? city?

how you drive? ride gma status or speed demon?

On my 3.3l, 22mpg on the guage = 20mpg actual. The exaggeration gets worse as the number goes higher. Best mileage I've seen is 29 actual, all highway but I can't help gunning it to get away from the idiots.

Gas Mileage

Postby HomeboyMI » Sat Feb 05, 2005 9:36 pm

I have a 4 cylinder Solara. I get 31.2 on gauge and 30.7 with pencil and paper. My Solara has progressively gotten better gas mileage as the miles on the odometer increase. Sometimes the pencil and paper mileage is 1 or 2 mpg different than the gauge. I agree with slingshots statement. 8)

I've had relatively poor mileage on my '05 4 banger, based on the gauge, so it's probably worse in reality. However, I've only done mostly city driving and I only have 480 miles on it. I'm sure as I rack up more miles, epecially around 1000, mileage will greatly improve.

MPG

Postby cgs0409 » Mon Feb 07, 2005 1:20 pm

I'm the old man in the crowd...so my driving habits are probably different than most of ya'll. I mostly drive the interstate...the best mileage I've gotten is 34.1...all on the interstate using cruise control. The worse I've gotten is 28.2...mixed city/interstate. I've got the 4 w/auto. I've been real happy with the fuel mileage. Oh...don't believe the computer...it lies...it's always at least a couple of mpg better than the actual figures. I do reset it at each fill up...just to see how it compares with the "real" numbers. I also found that the fuel mileage got better as time passed on...right now I have a little over 27,000 on the odometer. Try keeping the foot out of the sheet metal and the mileage will improve...heck...when I was young there were two speeds...WFO and stop...had a nice collection of speeding tickets to prove the point...ha. As you get older you find out that where you are going will still be there when you get there. It is fun gettting there fast...
