Dumb AC AI

Hey '04 SLE coupe owners...
You've had these things through one more winter (ragtops put out in the spring) so help me out.
Using the AUTO for the heating is great for 10 minute ride. Beyond that it get funky.

On AUTO set at 67 it cranks up the heat and warms up. Later it decides it wants to turn on the AC
and blast cold air at my face! It's flippin' 14 deg out and I'm using AC? Don't think so.
In the summer when it's 75 deg out, and 100 deg in the car in the sun, it chooses recirc even when
you're on manual. One extra button to punch every time you start up. (whining, I know)
But manual should be manual!

Feel free to testify... I imagine we all have HVAC units that we want to toss out the window but maybe
mine's extra stupid. Give me the three knobs anyday.

That's weird. Mine doesn't act the same. When I put it on AUTO, the AC button lights up and I just hit it to turn it off. Then the heat works fine. When it warms up enough, it might direct some air to my face but it certainly isn't AC'ed air. The AC button never goes back on by itself. I think you need to have yours fixed if that happens. During the winter I keep mine at AUTO set at 68 and never have to touch anything. If I go to Defrost then back to AUTO only then do I have to shut off the AC.

My system works as slingshot described. I am curious though why the AC pops on when auto is activated

I notice that the heat starts to turn on for me on AUTO at about 75. So I leave it at 75 on cold days, but here in Florida its nice and sunny again so I have it at 70 on AUTO.

Mine works as slingshot describes. I first set my to the hottest temp at 85, then when I feel that it has warmed up enough I lower the temp to 77 (and the AC would never light up again in the process.)

i would only know why the AC would come on with defrost because if u have it on defrost full heat and high and the AC on it will defrost alot faster then if the AC was off. so its tryin 2 speed it up,i would guess..

What I was referring to is when you turn on the heat, not the defrost. Yes the air comes on with defrost to eliminate the moister.

Thanks

I can see it going on for defrost only. Any other time is just silly when it's single digits outside.
I'm guessing it's just crappy programming. But I'll run through the service manual to see if there are
checks for it. I'll bet it's operating "as expected" though.

Don't remember the 'rents Avalon doing that. Thx all!
