Who Has Changed Speakers?

Postby zenmonkey » Mon Nov 01, 2004 9:23 pm

I took my car down to Tweeter the other day for an estimate at ripping the whole crap out and replacing it all with JL and Boston Acoustics. The two installer guys and I spent a solid 45 minutes trying to find the amps that are supposed to be in my SLE with the JBL head unit. We didn't find anything. I called the dealer and they told me that the amp is in plain sight under the passenger dash. I looked and didn't see anything. Even after removing the panel under the dash.

The techs told me after playing with my stereo that they did not think it was amped at all (since it sounds like crap above '32' on the volume). However, I know I should have the premium system since I bought the damned SLE Convertible, and I do have the JBL in-dash 6disc. Anyone know where the amps are so I can check them out, or have I truly been ripped off??

I already bought the dash kit, Alpine 9835, and 6disc changer too..

There is a tutorial in my thread about aftermarket stereos in the aftermarket section. Mine has been out twice already. Presently there is no HU that will also operate the steering controls. I had to sacrifice those until PAC comes out with an adaptor for our cars if they ever do. If you replace the soeakers without replacing the head unit, you will not get much improvement. I have the stock speakers in and with my Pionner, let me tell you, it's like night and day. I never would have thought the crappy stock speakers could ever sound so good. I do plan to get Pioneer 6x9's all around soon and an amp for some more deep and midbass, but for now, it sounds pretty damn good. I am so frustrated right now not having my steering controls and such, but I figure about another 6-12 months we will have a lot more aftermarket options. If not, we are all doing a good job at coming up with solutions of our own.
