I need a trailer hitch for my mountain bikes, jet ski...

Postby solaradad » Sun Nov 07, 2004 10:36 pm

Is there anyone who knows what I need to do to attach a trailer hitch to my black 2004 Solara Conv. I want to take a biking trip and I need a place to put my bike rack. I looked under the rear and the muffler is attached on the right side where most hitches would attach. I don't want it to stick out below the plastic bumper but the only way around this would be to modify the bumper. (That would be OK if it looks alright). Has anyone had a metal fabricator design one and attach it the car? Is there an aftermarket one available? Toyota is still checking for me. I hope someone can help on this one, and soon....

According the the owners manual, this vehicle is not equipped for towing of any kind. Try a bike rack that straps onto the trunk lid.

I also need help to find trailer hitch to carry bike / ski rack as so far I have no luck finding one. Talked to Toyota about 2 weeks ago, and there isn't for gen 2 yet. I'm especially looking for the model using the flat drawbar 5/8 x 2 as I believe it would be the least visible.

Anyway, as the mounting position as shown in the instruction from Drawtide hitch for gen 1 solara, it seems sharing the muffler screws.

A roof rack is not a common option on a folding soft-top convertible -- Porsche has one for their Boxster, designed mainly to carry bicycles.

Here's a link to the Boxster "roof transport system" -- http://www.rahul.net/dennisp/boxster/boxster-rts.shtml

Thanks for all the info. Espicially "jsie"! That's kinda what I had in mind. I have some good friends who are metal fabricators and can create whatever I need. And as far as the truck idea: I already have a F250-SuperDuty 4X4 Long bed that can tow 11,000 lbs. The wheelbase a about 172 inches. But when I want to go to the beach, I would like my Conv. with me, if you know what I mean. My truck, well, DRIVES LIKE A BIG TRUCK and gets 13 MPG. "nsx1164", thanks for the link to the Porshe site also.

I got one from ehitch.com. listed one for a 2004 coupe, I was able to install it on my 2004 sle convertible, with no problems, doesn't look bad at all, so now it's be a lot easier to take my bikes with me. :D

How's the clearance from the bottom of the bumper as mine is the SE sport which has the body kit below the bumper? Do you think the body kit will interference the hitch? Also, highly appreciate if you could provide some pics.

As mine is not convertible model, roof racks actually an option, but I hate the messy look of the aftermarket roof rack. I wish Toyotas have pre-drilled roofs like most German cars to install factory racks.
