Extra button spots on steering wheel??

I been wondering why they are there??? I noticed on other Toyotas , they have a voice activation button for nav. where the lower right blank is. I guess they got something going on down the road to fill them up, maybe the convertible top controls??? Anyone got any ideas?

Maybe the buttons were originally for cruise control settings like every other car has with buttons the the right side of the wheel then at the last minute for cost-cutting they decided to keep the same old stalk instead of rewiring, etc.

I wonder if the tech. manual has info about the blanks, does anyone got one? I was wondering if the wiring is there and you could install a button like on the other side for a accessory.

Anyone know how to remove the dummy buttons on the right side of the steering wheel? Been looking around the siennaclug.org forums and saw some interesting stuff... just wanted to see if our Solaras had similar things...

^Yeah, I'm wondering the same thing. What about the MIC? I wouldn't mind having voice command. For the button, try pushing in and up from the right side, I guess.

Here's the procedure (from the service manual) for removing the steering wheel switch pads. See:

http://www.angelfire.com/ky3/gabby/switch.jpg

From what I can determine there is no extra existing wiring for the 2 blank switch pads on the right side.

A friend who works for Toyota gave them to me. He owed me a few favors.
