MAJOR Convertible Top Problem
Hi all,
Found this forum today - maybe I can get some help from all you loyal Solara owners. I have an '04 convertible, and life was good - for the first two months. About a month ago, I suddenly started experiencing significant wind noise from the driver side. For weeks, I inspected the top mechanism, the seals, weatherstripping, but could not find a problem.
One day, while washing & waxing, I noticed that I could place my entire hand easily under the convertible top above the driver window. This seemed suspcious, so I took it to an upholstery shop for an opinion. The technician knew immediately what the problem was:
Malfunction in the tension cable
Happens all the time, according to this expert. OK, off to the dealer for warranty work. Of course, they didn't hear any wind noise, they didn't listen to my expert witness, and they started adjusting all sorts of things. When the service writer called me and told me the car was done, I again mentioned the broken tension cable and he said he'd run it to their upholstery shop. Two hours later, here's the context of the phone call I received:
"You were right, the tension cable is broken. We have to replace THE ENTIRE CONVERTIBLE TOP FOR $3,995. Under warranty, no cost to you."
Huh?!? Right now I'm trying to negotiate with them to have my technician attempt to repair the tension cable, as he has done on hundreds of other cars over the last 20 years.
Has ANYONE out there had a problem like this??
CHAPTER 2
I leased this car from an independent leasing agent. She leased herself an '04 Solara convertible as well. I stopped by her place today to say hi and explain my convertible top problem. I suggested she check her own top, so we did. I explained how the tension cable is supposed to hold the top down firmly over the doors. Well, guess what? One of her tension cables is broken as well.
So is this a problem with all '04 convertibles? Any and all info is appreciated!!
