Factory Intake Modified, Flapper valve removed!!

Postby Swiftoy » Mon Jan 17, 2005 2:55 pm

Hey guys and gals, I was bored this afternoon so I decided to remove the falpper valve in the intake and the secondary filter in the air box. I actually think it was put there to reduce intake noise but it certainly is a restriction.

Removal of the flapper was not that hard just use a dremel and no it does not look to pretty once you are done but you cannot see inside the intake tube anyway. The secondary filter you just gring down the nubs on the inside and it comes right out. Plugged everything back in and looks completely stock. No check engine lights!

Performance! There is most definitely a difference in performance. Throttle response is greatly improved. You know when you swing past about 3200 to 3300 rpm's and the car gets into the so called power band it really kicks in and gets moving well that transition is gone. It is completely smooth right off idle all the way to redline. Performance off idle is most noticeable. I am also still using the stock filter. If Injen's makes 9+ HP I certainly believe this modification makes some good gains as well. Yes Injen's approch is less convoluted no doubt but it does not draw cold air. There is no way I will shell out 200.00 plus dollars after doing this modification my cost will be a panel filter and that's it. Intake noise is slightly more but by no means offensive while driving.

Our air box is certainly one of the most restrictive I have seen compared to all the cars I have owned. Certainly there is power to be gained either way.

Why not try the Injen short-ram with a CAI extension? I think that Injen was thinking to just to draw in more air and not thinking about drawing in cold air.

Injen's intake is short ram only no CAI. No extension will exsist there simply is not enough room.

What pics would you like to see Got Sport?

Your engine bay, the intake, and the airbox, so that I can do the same. Thanks.

I would like to see pics as well.

I noticed the secondary filter. Can you safely get rid of that? If so, it's gone.

What does the flapper valve do? I recognize that name from the old V8 crossovers. Is that the same thing?

My bf's Nissan Titan had the same problem, so he cut out that part in the airbox and has had significant improvements as well. It is kinda messy with the dremmel, but worth it. Do you have a V6 or I4?

Be careful with that stuff. I did something similar with my 3000GT. There were these honeycomb filters that looked useless, so I simply removed them for better airflow. Well, my car started to stall and act funny. well, when I took it to Mitsubishi, these honeycomb filters actually directed air to the sensor. Without the filters, it created a tornado effect and therefore screwed up the readings to the cpu. Let me know how your car runs and post some pics if you could.

I will try and put together some pics by weeks end.

I have the v6 model.

The car runs just the same as before no wierd idle or driveability problems. I am still using the stock air filter though

The secondary filter on the solara is just a wad of cotton or something. I didn't like its looks, but if it is working for you, I would like to get rid of it.

Just uplug the MAF sensor located on top of the air box disconnect a couple of vacuum lines on the left side and the intake tube going to the throttle body. Be very careful not to drop the air box cover when removed as it houses the MAF meter. You will see there are 6 plastic rivets or little nubs as I call them holding the cotton filter to the air box. Grind them down with the dremel and it falls right out.

all of this sounds promising, but it seems like this is an irreversible process (more or less without spending big bucks).

am i correct in assuming this? i guess those pics would help. i am just a little concerned since the "long-term" effects that are specific to our solara havent been realized yet.

Oh yeah, its an irreversible process alright, although I imagine removing the "flapper valve" (which I believe is more correctly known as "Intake Air Control (IAC) valve #3") and the secondary filter should improve airflow and performance. (I would like to see some pics of this mod too.)

Still, I think I'll wait for the Injen pipe before I go cuttin' on my Solara.
