Overhead console vibration...

Overhead console vibration...

Postby mekaleka » Thu Feb 15, 2007 10:03 am

The Solara is so quiet that I hear an intermittent (road surface related) vibration in the overhead console.

Any suggestion for eliminating it?

If not, I'll have the dealer check it when I take it in for the next oil change.

My Overhead compartment made noise since I bought the car. I took it to the dealer to have it checked, and expressed seriousness on the issue as if it were be engine rattle or something...

I'll let you know if they fix it, and what they did to make it quiet.

Overall, this is my first Toyota, and I think it is way noisier than I would expect. This weekend I rented a Corolla with 15k miles on it, and it was WAY noisier than my Solara (OK, I know its a rental!). Kindy bugged by that.

A friend of mine has a Honda Element, about 1 year old...no noises whatsoever.

Update:

I took the car in to the dealer for 5k service @35k miles ($60 for a general inspection every 5k miles suck). Still complaining about the sunroof metal-glass tick issue and my noise on the sunglass/console, all they gave me was a nod. I let them know the sunglass holder was lose (I could stick a finger on the right side) and they said they were gonna look at it...when I came to pick up the car the next day, it was still loose and the service report said they changed the visor clips (broken???). THEY DON'T EVEN LISTEN TO WHAT WE ARE COMPLAINING!!!

Anyway, I took the car to another dealer to have a look at the sunroof tick issue, and called Toyota Headquarters in Puerto Rico to complain about it. Toyota took my call nicely and said they would schedule a visit between me and the dealer to work out the issue (that was last Tuesday).

Today, I receive a call from my dealer...I thought they were calling to let me know they received the sunglass console replacement (it was loose due to broken clips - they need to replace the whole assembly). Instead, I receive a call from one of the Service Reps, frantically asking what happened with my on my car. He received the call from Toyota and was astounded...this was the guy who received my car last Monday and screwed up the sunglass/visor clip note. Anyway, he was very worried that I was not satisfied with the service...he should be, he was the one that nodded and did nothing when I told him the sunroof problem was still there.

Anyway, I hopefully will have a post sometime this week or the next regarding my findings. Unfortunately, my warranty will expire soon. Hope I can land on the issue before fixing everything will become a drain on my pockets.

I took my car in for the 35,000 mile service last week and the dealership replaced the overhead sunglass unit. This is such a solid, quiet car that I am still surprised that the little rattle/vibration noise even bothered me.

Thanks for the input, Mekaleka...

Did they change the overhead sunglass unit under any TSB? How many times did you have to complain about the issue (since your first post back in February) to have the issue resolved? Mine had clips broken apparently...Dunno if it was like this since I bought the car and worst after they dismantled the whole ceiling assembly to check the sunroof, or they finally broke it on the last checkup .

I cannot comment with certainty, but a certain techsombody told me that Toyota might refuse to change a leaking shock absorber under warranty, claiming its not "broken"...possibly, your friendly technicia might help you actually putting up a certain part as broken...wonder if it happened to me.

Mine does this all the time and I've punched it quite a few times now. Was a lot worse when I had my snowies on b/c the ride was rougher. Don't hear it though over the stereo.

As far as the car being quiet, I don't think it is at all. I don't know what cars you've owned before but I've had a few, and it really doesn't even compare. Makes me really miss my millenia sometimes, usually just on the highway.

I only mentioned the sunglass vibration issue once on the 35k checkup visit...I think my customer rep at the dealership must be compensated according to customer satisfaction. lol.

As for the car being noisy...I've owned american cars/SUVs (Chevrolet, Ford, Oldsmobile, Pontiac) since my beloved Corolla in college. YES, the Solara is quiet and well built...especially for the money.

For some reason, I get a lot of wind noise when I put the top down! Not as bad when I roll the windows up and the windscreen is on the back though. :D

I got my overhead console replaced at dealer. No more noises...sstill, the sunroof tick noise came back 48 hours after picking the car up 2 months in dealer. SUCKY!

I tell you, it felt like a new car when I picked it off the dealer....but I've lost that feeling oncre again. I don't believe I am wishing of having a new car (its more than 1.5 year old), but I'd hate to sell/trade in the car on a simple sunroof noise.

I hate to be putting off complaints as my only recent posts, but I can't help it... :o

Took the car out about 2 weeks ago on the sunroof tick noise, and it came back again within 1 day. I stayed with the car for a bit to really test it (still haven't signed dealer papers as having job completed) when I heard a loud "bang" coming from the right top side of the car. I thought I was shot at, but no outside car damage whatsoever. Sunroof tick noise is worse than it was before going thru the dealer. :-?

All I can say is that I really hope something in my sunroof assembly broke, so that they replace the damn thing... maybe that will solve my problem. Its so irritating that if I can't get this problem solved, the Solara will undergo a C.H.I.P.S 80's sort cliff dive eventually (well, not really)... :drinking:
