just wondering if anybody has heard about the quality of this supercharger as compared to the TRD one? Anybody know what the gains are for this? I'm assuming i won't get the same kind of boost with this supercharger, based on the price, as i would if i got the TRD charger.

umm...this is not a supercharger.
It's components that help the car run better that are supercharged.

That engine bay looks familiar. :-?

Joe recently submitted some posts about this product. It's main function is to help deliver the proper amount of fuel to match the extra air shoved into the combustion chamber by the supercharger. It was developed to work with the TRD 3.4 liter supercharger in 4Runners and Tacomas. Joe got the guy who created it to develop an application for the TRD supercharger for our cars.

All correct and in my opinion, the best thing I've done for performance on my car yet! It's no secret that the best way to get power out of our platform is with forced induction. Unfortunately, TRD only took the solution part of the way, probably to keep costs down. I heard the early superchargers didn't have the same limitations as the newer ones like I have (maybe that's why they had more knock sensor problems) but it just doesn't even sound right.

You buy a supercharger to increase the airflow and if you have an automatic, this is what you get: Boost is cut between shifts and below ~3600 RPMs and the output was limited to 4psi. Tell ANYBODY that is serious about performance and they will ROTFL! Like many others here, my first thought was to use a smaller pulley and simply increase the boost. Fortunately, Thanks to this and other wonderful web forums, I was able to hear of other very smart guys experiences, mine was the same. I took it up to 6psi with an Apexi S-AFC-II to ballance the fuel but could not get it adjusted enough.

The correct way is to provide more fuel capacity and use timing correction. Gadget at Underdog Racing Development http://www.urdusa.com has figured this out on the supercharged 3.4L 4-Runner and really perfected it. Unfortunately, there is no fuel pump that will simply replace our stock pump due to size. The Kenne Bell Boost-A-Pump http://www.kennebell.net/accessories/boostapump/boostapump.htm is able to boost the stock fuel pumps capcity up to 50%. Mine is delivering sufficient capacity adjusted up 30% right now. Another great site to read about the theorey is http://www.modularfords.com/forums/showthread.php?t=7819. Of course simply increasing the capacity of the fuel pump without upgrading the injectors would be fruitless, Gadget provides 3188cc Bosch injectors as part of the kit at a VERY affordable price. The last significant piece is the Split Second Fuel Timing Calibrator. Those guys really did it right with a lot of functionality packed into 1 little programmable box. I have disconnected the output of my Apexi S-AFC-II and simply use it as a monitoring device now. You won't find all of these parts for less (trust me I tried  ). Gadget sells them as a kit on his web site.

Now as soon as I step on the gas, I boost. The car really feels like it is supercharged rather than only when the RPMs are over ~3600. Gadget said the kits are selling, I keep hoping that someone else here does it so they can confirm my experience. So far, I feel like I'm a salesman or something. I just want everyone else to enjoy it as I have. I really felt like I had hit a wall with the performance before. JoeB -

Would you recommennd this kit be install professionally? I'm not too familiar with installing those components. I wonder where it can be done in the Los Angeles area. Any ideas? Isn't your car an auto, I wonder how manuals will react with this upgrade?

Thanks

TRDMole, funny you should ask about the gas mileage. I posted about this before but I'll mention it again cause I think it's lost now. When I first bought the car in 99, I checked the mileage and seem to recall it was about 23-25 MPG (I think). After that, I never paid attention cause frankly, I don't care. I just buy more gas 8) . After doing all of these upgrades, I was POSITIVE my gas mileage would be terrible! So I checked on my trip to New Jersey to get my transmission upgraded at Level 10. The trip was 250 miles each way with about 65 miles of back roads through small towns, the rest highway. On the way up I had the opportunity to BLOW past a couple slow people 8) . Then after the tranny work was done, we took it for a test drive and a little more punishment so it wasn't all highway miles. I stopped for gas on the way back at 435 miles and put in 14.888 Gallons which calculates to 29.2MPG. I don't know if that is good compared to other peoples car but it was VERY good for mine and I was SHOCKED! I was sure it would have dropped to about 15MPG or so.

Astro, if you're not comfortable doing the install, I'd definitely have it done. Although none of these components seem difficult to install. Maybe a friend that will help. You don't take the fuel pump out of the tank or anything so I don't think it'll be that bad. -JoeB
