what i've heard: an amp mor powerful than the sub will obviously run "too much" power to the sub

A sub more powerfull than the amp might get blown if the output level on the head unit (or amp but i don't think so) is telling the sub to run at full power. The sub handles the amp's power, but when it's trying to push the bass level coming out of the HU, the amp's power run's out and distortion (or noise) comes out of the speaker,, blowing the sub.

the best analogy i can use is. Can u run a mack truck with a 6cyl................yes u can, but it would have to red line the engine just to move it. Thats what happens when you buy a high output sub (W7's, Eclipse titanium, Kicker L7's, etc.) and a small amp. MORE IS ALWAYS BETTER. its called "head room" its so you dont have to red line your amp EVER. When you red line an amp it causes distortion-which leads to hit--------which leads to melted voice coils---------which is the #1 cause of subwoofer failure from EVERY company on the market.

OVER KILL IS NOT A BAD THING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If it doesn't kill you.....it only makes you faster!

w7 can handle an F load of power
and the power vs distortion thing about blowing subs, i don't think that arguement has ever been sovled...
so don't overpower, and don't send your speakers/subs a crappy signal

Underpowering a sub is never bad for it. If it was you would fu(k up you system every time you turned the volume down. The car audio myth you are trying to explain is clipping. Inexperienced people (idiots) w/ weak amps will push them past their limits and cause clipping, where the top of the sine wave gets "clipped" off causeing a flat spot which is a constant (and high) voltage. B/c the voltage at the clipped points is constant, the sub doesn't move, which is its main cooling technique. A more powerfull amp will be able to create the voltage required to complete the sine wave and keep the sub moving. However, if the sub is able to handle significantly more than the rated power of the amp, it wont be able to create enough voltage to overheat the coil no matter how bad it is clipped. I.E. you cant blow a W7 w/ a 100watt amp no matter how stupid you are (by clipping it anyway). Underpowering a sub is NEVER bad for it. (stupid people are)
