Sony gets no respect in the sub world. When someone talks about a bad sub, it seems to always be Sony. (Like Hyundais in the car world...no offense to Hyundai owners). What I heard are they just have bad SQ (quality) and SPL (loudness), the two things that make a sub. Also, from what I heard, thier amps have output is also overrated and very low quality.

Im building a system soon, and everything Ive seen says to stay away from Sonys. I grabbed a few JBL subs off ebay for cheap (30 bucks for 2 12's), but not even sure if Im gunna use those. If you really want a cheap set, check out ebay for some local deals you can pick up, since subs are pretty heavy.

If you want something new and cheap, check out the Infinity reference series (1220s and 1230s) for subs. In all honesty though, Id start with the Amp, THEN the enclosure (box) and then think about the subs last, since the amp determines how much power you can run to the subs, and the box determines how large of subs you can get, and which ones (some are good for tighter applications, some dont work well without at least 3 cu.ft of room. To put what I heard about Sony in context, I read on the Sounddomain forum that "A good enclosure can make even Sony amps sound OK, but a bad enclosure can make JL Audio subs (Lexus of the sub world) sound like crap." Its all hearsay since I have nothin but a sleeping bag in my trunk right now, but I think my sources are pretty reliable.

Best place to read up on sub tech talk is Crutchfield.com, and then SoundDomain has an good forum to browse over for sound stuff. Crutchfield overcharges for most of its audio stuff though. Ive found SoundDomain and eTronics to be good online stores with fair prices for most of its products.

i don't agree...
if you do the box 1st, you're going to have limited choices on subs
pick your sub, then get/build a box that will suit the sub

I would start with the subs first. To determine how much power and how many watts you need to run the subs. this is where you should start looking for a amp to meet the subs wattage requirments. then the box should be last since you need to figure out how much cu. ft it needs to meet the subs specs. ( this is what can make a sub sound good )

if you want a good set-up for decent amt money. Dont go for sony subs. or amps. I would go with pheonix gold subs and amps. They are not pricy but also sound good at the same time. You can look for other alternatives such as JBl amps. The 600.1 is a good amp running some Infinte subs which is 300watts rms. But i dont have the model number on the subs. You can get the JBL amp pretty cheap. I sold one for $160. you spend the rest on your subs.

but like i mentioned in my above statement. follow those steps and you can't go wrong.

1. Subs
2. Amp
3. Box to meet specs..

I thought about it, and you guys are right.

Its really a big mesh of the three. I actually had in mind what kind of subs I wanted (2 12"s, 300w, 4ohm ea), then then thought about the amp. So i basically had the kind of sub picked out first before I even looked at the amp and box. In narrowing my choices I keep flippin between the three, but I guess what is most set in my head is 2 12s @ ~500-600w total, small sealed box, since I want decent trunk space left. Since trunk space was pretty high priority for me (I keep a decent amount of crap back there), and probably the least flexible of the three for me, I was looking for subs based on how they would do in a small sealed box.

I guess it depends on your priorities, but if you dont really have any limitations like that, you should find out what sub and amp you want first before you shop for the box.

Bad advice on my part before.

just like what everyone else said. important thing also is to decide what size subs you need, this usually goes along with what you listen to, if you listen to say classical, jazz etc probably better off with 10' or smaller subs. listen to hiphop, jungle better off with bigger subs 12 and up. also how much do you want out of your subs. for some people they just want the subs to fill in the low frequencies. for others like me, i want my subs to make cars around me shake when they are on so i'm going to eventually switch to a subs that has much more power.

This would be my suggestion for a cheap/loud/clean bass set up. Phoenix gold Titanium subs are great for the money, and the bx1000d is cheap and plenty powerfull

Nascar would be a sport if half the cars were driving the other direction.
