What happens if water pump fails?

What happens if water pump fails?

Postby nmatthis » Wed Dec 24, 2008 11:02 pm

My 99 Solara SE V6 has 160k miles on it with the original water pump. One of my friends has a Camry and said that her water pump failed while she was driving and it ended up doing $2000 in damage to her engine. This sounded kind of excessive to me. But regardless, what would happen to my engine if the water pump fails? I mean, as soon as it started to overheat, I'd pull over and turn the engine off. It's not like I would try to force the car to keep going or something. Thanks.

If the water pump stops, so does the coolant flow. Meaning yes your engine will most likely overheat. Depending on your driving surroundings at that moment. Meaning on the express way, you would be OK. But in stop and go traffic your car won't make it. Its good money to spend if you plan on keeping your car around. Are you V6 or I4? Its not a bad idea to change T belt, and seals while your in there. Especially with 160k miles. If your still on the OE water pump, money says your still on the OE T belt.

Jesus, it was a mistake man. I posted the original a while back and due to some life issues, I wasn't able to check on the thread.
