v6 clutch hydraulic system question

v6 clutch hydraulic system question

Postby therieldeal » Thu Mar 26, 2009 4:43 am

So a few months back I purchased a 99 camry v6 manual transmission from someone here on the forum. I'm using it as part of a transmission conversion into a totally different vehicle.

I had a quick question about the clutch linkage. Inline on the clutch hydraulic line there is a block/valve of sorts. What is this and what does it do? I was thinking it must be a damper of some sort, perhaps to slow down the release of the clutch. Do you think I should I retain it in my install or eliminate it?

The car is street driven but also goes to the drag strip whenever possible. It runs low 12's now when I can keep the transmission together, aiming for 11.51 eventually with the camry trans (no cage).

Thanks!

it's an accumulator, but it doesn't seem to serve much purpose. I think that part of the design is so that it makes the system more serviceable by connecting shorter pieces of hard line

as for, do you need it? no, you don't. when I did my tranny swap, my accumulator and attached lines were so rusted together that I just by-passed it using a single hard line straight from the soft clutch line to the slave cylinder

It’s a 95 ford escort GT...

The engine is a 1.8 dohc out of a 93 mazda 323 GTR - which was a jdm only street-legal rally car. I'm running 23 pounds of boost on megasquirt 2, 320whp 325wtq.

My best time is 12.28 at 117.2, but my friends managed to miss that run with the camera :(. Once I get the E153 in there, spend a little more time on my tune, and try some real bias-ply slicks... I should be in the 11's no problem.

The problem I'm having is the components in the stock tranny are simply not strong enough. I have a quaife LSD installed, so that’s fine... but most recently I stripped all the teeth off of 3rd gear. Not even during a shift... just driving along, mid-gear at full boost on a smooth road.

I'm curious to know how you will mount the toyota tranny to the mazda engine. If I'm not mistaken, that's basically the same 1.8L "BP"engine found in the 94-06 mazda miata. custom welded-on bellhousing? sounds like a beast!

Yes, it's the same basic engine as the miata. The 91-96 escort GT came stock with a BP, as did the protégé lx from 90-94 and the kia sephia from 95-97. The gtr engine was essentially "built" from the factory though, and of course included a sizeable turbo :D.

I'll be using an adapter plate between the block and tranny, custom mounts, a hybrid clutch, etc etc etc. Should be quite a project!
