Redirecting heating/ac tubes to heat seats?

Redirecting heating/ac tubes to heat seats?

Postby mazen222 » Sun Nov 18, 2007 10:28 am

I have been thinking a lot about redirecting the air vents located under the seat to go inside the seat in order to have heated/cooled seats.

Since the seats are made of perforated leather, i think this should be prety easy to do.

I have seen a post about this long time ago but never got anything back from it.

I was wondering,
- what kind of problems i might face?
- is it easy to remove the seats? (power seats)
- is it easy to open up the leather seats to install the tubes inside without damaging them?
- any tips, suggestions on this?

I'm think of doing this next summer, it's still soon but i would like to start gathering some info on this. I might even write a tutorial about it if it works out.

Thanks!

Interesting idea. I'm curious to see what others have to say about feasibility. I'm sure what you want to do is similar to how the luxury cars do it.

i like the idea, but i dont think the blower will be strong enough to get the air to shoot out of the seats.

it would be strong enough if you full blast on floor setting, but then you would suffer by having no face windage.

you can try... there are tubes that exit right out under the seat.

good point, but i think I can fix this by making the wholes of the tubes that i will run inside the seat bigger, this will reduce the thrust needed. And i dont really want air to shoot out of the seat, just heat them a litle or cool them.

My big question remains, will i be able to open the seat to insert the tubes inside without ripping the leather

since the leather is just a cover, you will need to buy a hog ring pliers and replacement rings to pull the leather back. im curious how you are going to run the piping, because you will need to be on top of the cusion, otherwise it will take way too long if you are heating up the foam... good idea though. might be easier to buy an electric seat heater that you install under the leather (no cool air though)

The cars that have this option, use fans in the seat bottoms, they also have special perforated leather.
I don't think you can do it unless you redesigned the entire seat bottom and added extra ventilation.

It would be a big project to say the least.

do it! if something messes up then go buy some of the seats that already do it and the fans it requires!

I think you have an excellent idea: I've thought of doing something about that myself. I want A/C there. Cold can be uncomfortable, but 120 degree black leather in the sunshine summer seat can be downright unbearable.

I don;t think it would be too difficult to run some ducting through the space between the seat bottom and seat back, and although this wouldn't cool the whole seat I think having cool air behind you would be sweet.

the air can be pretty hot sometimes..I would be anxious that it start to smell like burning or that it makes the leather dry, peeling, crunch, darker...

if you try it,let us know..my ass would appreciate a little hot seat, here it is freezing and lot of snow in Canada today 8) ..

I dont like the looks of those cheap seats you put on top of the original ones.

I like the leather. And i want to have cooling also, not just heating.

I doubt that the heat will mess up the leather. on hot summer days with the windows closed it get pretty hot in there.

I'm pretty convinced that i'm gonna do this next summer. Thanks for the tips!
