what rpm do you manual drivers shift at

just test drove a v6 manual today (Woohhoooo). it was 2001 se v6, silver, charcoal interior, w/ sunroof. btw i noticed in the 2001 there is an option for 'mid' along with bass and treble on the stereo, whereas in my 2000, theres only bass and treble. anyways, i noticed that for decent acceleration, i was shifting around 3000 rpm, which struck me as a bit odd. in our 95 avalon, with the same engine, i feel the same amount of acceleration by letting it shift at 2200-2300 rpm, and its an automatic. any ideas why this is? also, when you guys are cruising 80 in 5th gear, what rpm is ur engine at? do manuals have cruise control? sorry bout all the questions, thanks in advance.

see thats weird. i donno why the avalon shifts at such low points, and i still get the same amt of acceleration. and in my I4 right now, im at 3000rpm going 80mph. Its a weaker engine, and theres one less gear, and still has the same rpm as the v6 5spds. why is this???

i think your 4th and our 5th are almost identical, I dont know much about transmissions, but they're both overdrive gears.

It really bothers me to see that needle at 3K when crusing at 80MPH whereas my friends' V8 Camaro is at 1.5K in 6th gear.

heh, my friend used to have a 95' pontiac bonniville. at 80 it would hold a little above 1200 rpm. that same day his antifreese leaked into his engine. that same day i got my solara. anyway it stayed at the rpm because the car had power suspension. at those speeds it actually helps

It doesn't matter that you are at 3000RPM at 80, I still get around 25 mpg going that fast. Honda's are bad about being wound up in 5th gear crusing speed also, but they get good mileage.

So we pretty much shift @ 2.5 or 3k for each gear?

i.e. 1st 2.5k SHIFT
2nd 3k SHIFT
3rd 3k SHIFT
4th 3k SHIFT
5th

How high RPMs has one shifted through the gears?

I generally shift around 3k. But, when I'm racing I sometimes go up to around 5k. I noticed the s/c really kicks in at higher RPMs.

my s/c auto shifts at 5.9~6K 3 gear when I really step on the pedal and won't let go.

is that normal?

I got a 5-sp V6 99SE and according to the manual, we are to shift to 2nd after 15mph, then to 3rd at 30mph, to 4th at 40mph, and to 5th at 45 mph. I personally have to shift at higher speeds because of so many damn hills here in GA, but i'd say 3-3.5K rpms sounds about average, or maybe less if going down the hill :drinking: cheers!!
