Which Clutch Kit to purchase?

Which Clutch Kit to purchase?

Postby PeteGLH » Fri Dec 11, 2009 4:19 pm

Hey guys,

I've been searching around the forums and got great advice and prices from people on here (Thx to JamesT) for some clutch kits for my 5-speed '99 Solara.

I daily drive my car, currently completely stock. I have plans for boosting in the next year and the time has come to replace my clutch.

A little background on myself: I have had several boosted cars in the past
(3 Turbo Omni GLH's, 1 Turbo 5-Speed '89 Minivan) All ran low 14's. I am a boosthead no doubt.

I am looking for a good clutch (full-faced) that can be daily driven but that will take the occassional drag-strip abuse, drive well in -20 weather, and sustain the eventual blower that will run somewhere around 5.5 - 7.5 psi. (I wouldn't go any higher I think due to all the internal work that would be involved) Let's say that if my car puts down 260-280 lbs/ft of torque, I'll be quite happy!

My choices have come down to these two:

Clutchmasters FX2000 Stage 2 kit.
ACT Modified Street TY4-HDMM kit.

I have had a lot of praise for the Clutchmasters, but I personally think the ACT kit is nice too.

I would like to know your thoughts my answering this simple poll.

Thanks in advance, and I must say that if you need prices on Clutch parts, contact JamesT. Very honest prices and it's always nice to vouch for a member.

Thanks all!

I have Clutchmasters stage 3, but had ordered the ACT kit before and it was a pain because it had a wrong part (can't remember what part) and I had to waste $$ on the labor - I believe ACT already fixed the issue but I just hold a grudge against them because they wouldn't help me with the labor costs I had to waste (it was my daily driver at the time and I couldn't afford to wait for the part - they would not to next day delivery either).
So, with that said - I would go with Clutchmasters :D

I'll be ordering the Clutchmasters stage 3 as well. I've read nothing but good things about it. If I remember correctly, it come with the correct alignment tool that most other makers don't include.
