Possible replacement TRD parts- Idler pulleys

Postby siennasc98 » Fri Sep 29, 2006 11:07 pm

I've been searching for an alternate source for my TRD idler pulleys and dynamic tensioner.
I think I found them through Dayco who also makes some idler pulleys (smooth and groove) and dynamic (automatic) no slack idler tensioners for Ford and GM. I think the bearings are also made by NTN.

By the way, Amazon.com sells Dayco products and I ordered the following for test fitting purposes and hopefully they can be used as spare parts.
89224 Automatic (dynamic) belt tensioner
89007 Smooth idler pulley w/o flange
89009 6-groove idler pulley

Also, I bought the Poly-Cog belt 5060895 from Amazon for $22.15 + 4.75 shipping.

OOOOO good looking out man. My supercharger parts are still doing good, but good to know that someone out there is doing research on spares.

The idler pulleys below are the same to what we have on our S/C idler plate and the dynamic tensioner. The bearings are also NTN but made in Taiwan.

89007 Smooth idler pulley w/o flange
89009 6-groove idler pulley

Right photo: Old (TRD) on the left and new (Dayco) on the right -> smooth and 6-groove pulleys.

Though the 89224, dynamic (automatic) tensioner (arm/body) is different from the TRD issued and I'm returning it to Amazon.

I'll keep looking for possible substitute.

Tensioners and pulleys

Postby PDX SuperSolara » Tue Oct 10, 2006 4:39 pm

Something you may find out is that usually you can replace just the bearing on those tensioners and pulleys. They can usually be pressed out, a replacement purchased really cheep and a new one pressed in. The bearing is all that usually needs replacement anyway. That can save big bucks.

I will not waste my time finding the type of bearing and searching a shop to press (out and in the bearing) if I can buy them cheap like these;

Dayco 89007 Smooth pulley @ $13.21/each from Amazon.com
Dayco 89009 Groove pulley @ $12.50/each from Amazon.com

BTW, I think the correct dynamic (automatic) belt tensioner replacement from Dayco is P/N 89203. I have one coming this week from an eBay purchase and I hope it's the right one for our S/C.

How do you know when you need to replace the pulleys and tensioner?

ooo, perfect timing sienna. I've been hearing a squeel under my hood that might be the tensioner. Any other signs i should be looking for? the tensioner arm itself is still very tight.

Loss of tension - Tension loss is evidenced by belt squeal.

Metal to metal contact - If there is a metal-to-metal contact between the arm and spring case, this is a sign of spring bushing or pivot busing wear.

Tensioner noise - Removed the belt and check the pulley for free rotation, if you hear a noise or feel resistance to turning, this could be the sound of impending bearing failure.

Belt tracking improperly - If the belt is tracking off centre, or off the edge of the pulley, this is a sign of busing wear resulting in tensioner misalignment.

Update:
The (P/N 89203) main arm and tensioner (spring loaded) body are the same as on the TRD dynamic belt tensioner.

Though you need to change to pulley that came with it, with another Dayco product (P/N 89007). Now I have a perfect dynamic belt tensioner replacement or spare part.

Here is the picture of the Dayco tensioner (P/N 89203) as received (Left), replacement smooth pulley (P/N 89007) and the modified tensioner (Right).

Does it just look the same or you're sure it's the same to use as a replacement?

BTW how many spares did you buy? Thanks for doing all the work!

They are exactly the same (after the smooth pulley change). I'll make three (3) spares. Here are some pictures, on the left is the original TRD and the right is the Dayco.

I'll try to install the replacement dynamic belt tensioner this weekend.
