Tach isn't reading correctly and my catalytic conv is bad
I've got an 04 Solara XLE V6 with about 145000 miles on it.
For the past 6~8 months, my tachometer is reading below zero at idle, and reading low while driving. I went to the dealer, they said the cluster was bad, but that it wouldn't effect the motor in anyway.
I was driving down I-70 yesterday at 70mph (w/cruise) with the windows down and the A/C off for about an hour. I look down and the check engine, TCS and VSC lights are on. Sigh. I go to the dealer. They say its a PO420 core, and that the catalytic convertor is clogged/clogging. They cleared the code and I went home.
Is it worth trying to "clean" the catalytic convertor out? Unbolting it, and trying to get whatever loose broken-down material is in there, out. I really don't want to replace it right now, we are in the process of buying a fully loaded Camry Hybrid, and I would rather spend my time than my money (fixing, not replacing)
Thoughts? Is there a chance the tach and catalytic convertor issues are related?
