Why did you "need a new engine?"

I've heard that line before: I've got a friend that drove a car for 4 years after the previous owner was told it needed "a new engine"

cylinder #4 and #6 are 100/125 psi on the compression test. Leak Down test revealed 75%/85% leakage, blowing from oil cap, which means bad rings.
