Replacing Drum Brakes

Postby ASG14 » Wed Apr 22, 2009 7:45 pm

^ NO! Drum and Disc brakes are DIFFERENT!

A drum brake is a drum brake and a disc is a disc.

If you have a caliper and pads, it's a disc.
If you have a Drum and shoe's, it;s a drum.

THAT SIMPLE!

no, I think the gen 1-1.5 i've all seen with rear drums (except the SLE V6, i've seen those with rear discs) And I've seen gen 2's with both, mainly rear discs.

Gen 1/1.5, if they were V6, they had Disc, if they were I4, they had drum. Same as the Gen 4.

(in the "hat" portion of the rotor).....the drum is strictly for parking brake, and the rotor is for normal braking.

I've never seen a solara in toronto here without rear discs. Maybe its only a US thing?

Again, my 99 Solara has both in the rear... discs with pads that produces ~25% of the braking power when pressing the foot pedal. Inside those discs are the shoes that are activated by the hand brake, the drum part is actually the inside of the discs.

Everything is a bolt on, and not too hard as long as you know the basics on cars. trd4life here I think has a couple sets laying around he can sell.

how much roughly is a set cost, will they fit gen5?
i have a 2003 4cyl SE, came with rear disc, but my 2002 4cyl LE has drum, even though both has ABS.

Sorry to tell you, it is STILL a disc brake, plain and simple. It's not a hard concept to grasp.

The Gen 5 is more complicated. And the Gen 3/4 Camry, Gen 1 Solara parts will not work. Here is the DIY I wrote for it: http://www.toyotanation.com/forum/t288166.html

yes it does look good, as for the drilled/slotted, i have just installed 2 in the front. Its hard to notice since i only have the oem mags, but if you have nice aftermarket mags, its worth the money... in the rear, i dont think it is since stopping power is only 25% compared to 75% in the front
