How to disable automatic radio antenna?

Postby jzwu » Fri Mar 06, 2009 12:04 pm

Hi,

I have a 2001 SLE V6 convertible equiped with an automatic radio antenna. But the antenna itself is stuck in the up position, however the antenna motor still faithfully runs every time I start up or turn off the car. I can hear it running and it is annoying.

Anyone knows how to disable it?

^Convertibles do since they don't have the rear glass.

To just disable the antenna, you can unplug the wire harness from the motor in the trunk. If you can still hear the motor running, then you can also just buy a replacement antenna separate from the motor (which is much cheaper). The part that pushes and pulls the antenna is plastic, which commonly breaks.

Thanks for the pointer! I will try to unplug the harness in the trunk. Already got a cool after market short black antenna and it works well.

Sorry, not photos 'cuz I have already got rid of the OEM antenna.

^^^Not a big deal with the pics. I was just curious how horrible a chrome antenna looks on a Gen 1. I never liked chrome antennas. I would do the samething and either install and shorter black one or delete the whole thing all together.

Glad to hear you found a solution. :)

Use an antenna from a Honda S2000... They should work very well. :) I considered putting one on my convertible, but ended up just unplugging it altogether because -- let's face it, I'm deaf. Why am I gonna need the radio? LOL!

Just unplugged the antenna motor. No more noise

Well, the OEM chrome antenna doesn't look too bad, just like those you see on other cars. It is pretty long though.

Hi,

You convertible looks exactly like mine, except mine is 2001. I thought you replaced the soft top not long ago...

I did, just over a year ago. I went from tan to black.
