Sticky caliper - aftermarket upgrade??

Sticky caliper - aftermarket upgrade??

Postby Solarizona » Fri Jan 16, 2009 3:00 pm

So my front driver's side caliper is sticking and seems to get worse every couple days. Before I replace it, does anyone know of a performance aftermarket set? Not looking for a big brake kit, just the caliper. Anyone have some experience with rebuilt calipers? Should I just go new? Thanks.

Not on my Solara, but I used to drive E28 BMWs and used rebuilt calipers a couple of times with no issues whatsoever. I would not hesitate to go that route with my Solara if it is ever needed. I'm not aware of any aftermarket upgrades, but maybe others are? Good luck whichever route you go.

edit - the it was 2 different cars I used the rebuilt calipers on. I just reread my message and realized it sounded like I was constantly replacing calipers on the same car, that's not the case.

Thanks yota. I can't find anything as far as a "performance" caliper for this car. If there was I guess tons of people on here would already have them. So, rebuilt it is - about 1/3 the price of a new one.

there are no performance aftermarket alternatives without stepping up to a big brake kit.

Shoot- get some SSBC brand 6 or 8 piston units! You won't even be able to see the rotor- it'll be all caliper! :drinking:

I thought there was the 2 piston caliper upgrade from the gs300? I know thought u will need to go with the rotors from it too and then youd need to run at least a 16'' wheel i believe

94-96 Camry V6 WITH ABS, and 94-96 ES300 had dual piston.

Did the Supra BBK with SP33D's caliper relocation bracket's yesterday on my friend's '95 5SFE Camry, and went to the twin piston calipers for it.

^Adam, what kind of grinding/modification was necessary to get the brackets/rotors to sit fine? I've been contemplating upgrading to some two-pot calipers w/EricSol-sp33d brackets for a minute now.

the twin piston calipers- yup...but still not sure if they actually work any better since toyota basically went from a fair-sized single piston (gen3) to a dual small piston (later gen3 and es300), but then went back to a big single piston for the gen4s

still not sure about that...

As King said, I really have no idea if they work better. All I can think is they put a more even pressure on the pad over the single big piston.

They should be a direct bolt on. Well, the single and dual pistom calipers ont he Gen 3 are interchangable. So I can;t be sure on the Gen 4, as the Gen 3 and Gen 4 V6 use different pads.

Krispy, only modification needed is to the backing plate and caliper bracket. Just need to bend the backing plate so that it does not hit the rotor.

As for the bracket, thats the time consuming part. Not hard, just takes a while. You need a 4 1/2" grinding wheel, and a dremel is also good to have around. If no dremel, a good file.

If you can get a kit, do it. Just need 17" or bigger rims.
