pre-service engine question

my 01 solara is making very loud noises when it's starting cold. I can hear the belt squeaking, as well as a rather loud vibration noise that sounds like a piece of metal or something is lose in the engine compartment. There's also a very strong gasline smell on the outside during a start. The noise goes away after about 10 minutes of driving.

The belt might need replacing (even though it was replaced less than 10,000 miles ago). But what could be the cause for the vibration noise and gasline smell?

Thanks all.

Define piece of metal loose... like a knocking? Pinging? Rattling? If it's knocking and you smell gas, could be a problem...
