Solara 06 Roof Rack

Solara 06 Roof Rack

Postby mike80 » Wed Feb 27, 2008 8:44 am

Hello everyone :D
Has anyone installed a roof rack (like yakima, thule, etc.) on your solara? Please post your experience or any advices?

I would like to transport a windsurf board and a bike, but still am not sure if the roof racks are safe enough with solara. I would be much more confident with camry 4dr and a rack though ... hence this post :-?

Thank you all!!! 8)

P.S. Yakima says their racks may cause damage to solara's after prolonged use. Not really comforting.

Any rooftop rack will cause damage or at least marks if you leave them on all the time.

Don't have one on my Solara (for obvious reasons, but I've used Yakimas in the past with great results.

Good luck. (and Welcome to SG) ;)

Thule and Yakima are my favorites. Both for function and for style points.

Make sure you put down some form of paint protection, like the clear bra stuff where any surface may be touching your car, just to prevent problems.

Can rubber insulation be damaged?

Postby mike80 » Sun Mar 02, 2008 10:20 am

Hey guys! thank you much for your replies. I have one more question - can the rubber around doors be damaged by the rack ? This is probably my main concern, since if this becomes an issue than I guess the water will start getting inside, which is like the worst case scenario.

it is possible to damage the weatherstripping, yes. But not probable. Does that make sense? The indentation that would remain from the pressure of the clamping system could easily be taken out with a heat gun and a flat screwdriver.

^^ Roger that

Best bet it to take them off when you're not using them and don't be in a hurry installing/removing them as to not damage the rubber. (wish I had listened to my own advice 20 years ago! LOL!)
