Modding stock projectors

Modding stock projectors

Postby XEusioN » Sat Jan 19, 2008 4:19 pm

Hey guys,

I've been working on my spare headlight as a small side project. I finally covered up the sign-illuminator slit in the sheild on the stock projectors and built a test power supply.

I figured I'll post some pics as I play with a few things in case anybody was interested :)

Cheers 8)

This is with the OEM halogen bulb in:

Just made a few changes to the setup, I got better color out of it, but lost sharpness by quite a bit.

Pics in a minute :)

I hate those little humps on top. Wish there was some way for it to be straight all the way.

4mm spacers on the bottom shield screws:

Ignore the shape change of the cutoff, its because the projector was maybe a foot and and a half off the ground pointing upwards towards the wall, and it's hard for the camera to accurately render the brightness details too.

There's more color now, but I lost a good amount of sharpness on the cutoff, because the light coming from the reflector bowl is now hitting the shield at an angle and bending over it. Obviously not an ideal spacer setup, but it's all I had lying around tonight.

Pretty sweet color for halogen bulbs though 8)

You could file down the shield and get rid of it, but as I learned when messing with things, if it's not perfect, the defects are going to be magnified greatly.

I was a little careless trying to rip off the flap thing and as a result made a few nicks in the top of the sheild which you can see in the cutoff beam. It doesn't show in the pictures, but you can see it in person.

I just started a fire to show you how that would look :o

I used a plastic gift card and mounted it in place of the shield and fired it up...here's how it looks:

If you look closely, you can see the burnhole in the card

:D

Anyways, here is a picture of the shield after I soldered over the slit. Please note that soldering it shut is a terrible and temporary solution, on my final setup, this will be welded.

As to reduce the risk of more fires inside, I went back to the metal shield.

Here we are with 1.5mm spacers, this looks much better than the big spacers, it retains sharpness similar to stock, while beefing up the color.

Ignore the fact that these may not look as bright as before, or less yellow than before. My camera was still in a custom mode from the other night that i had forgotten about

I wish I had a spare HID ballast and bulb inside to see the "real color" but I don't :)

I have worked on the stock project for 2 years ago.. But i did not use the solder. i just take out the bending metal sheet and use the aluminium tape to cover. and it is much easier. I have tested with spacer as well..but this uesless nth good output

if u want great output u have to switch to d2s or d4s projector

right now i am using the s2k projector with the 300zx clear and is working like a charm

Yeah I knew that was what I would inevitably do, but I just wanted to see what I could coax out of these anyway :)

Non-AFS RX projectors, clear lenses and some #8 washers are on my to-do/wish-list :)
