Brakes and Rotors Replacement

Brakes and Rotors Replacement

Postby crazygreek » Fri May 11, 2007 12:12 pm

I know this was discussed somewhere but can't find it with the search being down. I just went to get my winter tires taken off and I need new brakes and rotors all the way around to pass inspection.

Was wondering about the R1 Concept Rotors and how anyone made out installed these. So far it was the only rotors and pads that I found for the gen. But there warrenty is not that great which makes me wonder. What you guys think? If not what is a good cross drilled rotor and pad that does not produce alot of dust.

Lastly where a good place to start looking for rims. Would like to put on some 18" thin 5 spoke?

My setup include R1 Concepts Preminium rotors rotors + pads with 19" Konig HotSwap...(thin spokes). I'm happy with the result and I'll enjoy it more with the SS lines.

I'm about to install also my StopTech SS brake lines + paint my calipers in black.

There is other choice...like KYB rotors and few others.

Take a look

They're a small company in Anaheim, CA - I went to their shop to will-call my rotors/premium pads - nice guys too!

So far I LOVE the stopping power I now have - very noticeable difference from OEM - I'm pretty sure it's mostly the pads though. ;)

Here's a couple shots of mine on:

I'd give 'em :up::up: ;)

Just placed my order!!!

Finally my first performance mod. Hope I'm happy.

I just ordered my rotors and pads from R! Concepts. Got the R1-Premium Drill/Slot front and rear. Also ordered the organic pads. Talked to Tony and he suggested these pads due to less dust and squeal versus the ceremic pads. I guess the true question is what's the difference. The way he was talking the ceremics make alot of dust. But made it sound as if for what I was looking for it would be a minimal braking difference.

Sebas007, which pads did you get organic or ceramic. And did you notice any difference from old to new.

Also...PXLpainter what kind of paint did you use for your calipers. I was going to order it from Tire Rack but not sure. Figured I might as well paint them while there off right!

I had no choice regarding pads when I bought my rotors...it was ceramic made. I feel a difference in braking but not that much. It worth it tho ! :)

Do you get alot of dust on your rims. Tony from R1 Concepts told me he used to have them on his car would get alot of dust on his rims. Had to wash his car constantly. I may call him back to change the order. Let me know what you think.

Thanks.

Just got Caliper paint from AutoZone - whatever brand was on the shelf. If you ordered the premium rotors like Sebas did, they're already painted.

Also - I get A LOT of dust from the brakes but its totally worth it! I wash my car about once a week anyway and in-between I'll clean off the wheels if they need it. No big deal for me. ;)

Got them installed over the weekend. Painted calipers the whole works. At first they seem kinda spongie but everyday they seem to repond better and better. There seems to be little dragging noise coming from them under light braking. I am assuming the pads just need to seat themself. Hopefully this will all self adjust and go away. Waiting to put a few more normal driving time on them before I really test them out. Hope it was worth it. My mechanic was leary of installing aftermarket parts, but went along with it. Looks very good. Now just need new rims and a suspension drop and we'll be good to go.

To be honest, you would of been fine w/ just slotted rotors and a good brake pad. But hey to each his/her own.

I was looking through these guys' site, and I don't see slotted only rotors, I guess I have to call.

I just ordered the R1 drilled/slotted rotors today. w00t. I have Duralast ceramic pads, i think they were less dirty than the stock ones. Maybe it's just me, or maybe I just brake less than i used to.

Are the brake lines a hard DIY? Not so tech-saavy, but, if its easy to do on your own, i'll get em. Was thinking of getting the stoptech lines, but after reading the Gen 2 PDF Manuals, I just confused myself more. lol

And yea, after hearing stories of how drilled rotors crack more easily, I looked for slotted onlies on R1, I don't think they have em on the website.

The stainless brake lines DIY is not that hard...but can be sloppy. I took avantage of having my brake lines changed to paint and "bake" my calipers. I used a caliper paint...high heat resistent and they were saying to bake them for 30 minutes at 200F to make the paint adherate better to the calipers and be more homogen. If you do it yourself be extremely aware to not torque the banjo-bolt too much...14 pounds per foot. The banjo-bolt is the drilled bolt that bring the oil thru the brakes lines to the calipers piston. Overall per wheel you very few operation to do to complete the process...I lost some brake oil in the process...I think it is normal for noobies...also try to be 2 to bleed the brakes...it is easier than to use a bleed kit crap.
