Exhaust pipe thing

Exhaust pipe thing

Postby kingkakyle » Wed Apr 05, 2006 10:20 pm

I did a search and could not find
u can yell at me if i missed it though

well while i was driving behind another solara i saw that the pip that goes to the muffler was riding really low
so when i get home i look under my car and see that its really low as well
im just wondering if its part of the design?
it seems that there is space for it to sit higher and ya
i haven't hit it or anything, but im a little worried that it might cause a problem?

heres some pics:

its how the car was made, gen 1 and 1.5's are the same way. the camrys are like this as well. im not sure why the design is like that, maybe some other guys can shed some light on this.

I always assumed it was dodging moving parts from the rear suspension. Hmmm... exhaust design question... Phreakwho could we call Phreakon to shed Phreaksome light on this? PhreakWho indeed? Phreak

Hmmm, who was Mike referring to?

The bend just before the muffler is intentional. All Camrys, Avalons and Solaras have the same characteristic.

In the case of a rear impact, the pipe will bend and redirect the energy of the collision. (This overcomes the column strength of the tubing in the bend) Had it been straight with no bend, the energy would quickly transfer forward damaging the converter assembly or cracking the manifold or worse damaging the engine. Also a risk is the possibility of the pipe breaking and digging into the ground thus becoming a pole vault or intruding the passenger cabin. (As rare this possibility is they won't take a risk.)

I'm sure Toyota discovered this during a crash test and now this is manditory design criteria.

Personally, I hate the look. I tried to get this changed on the Gen 2 Avalon with no success. Just chalk it up to Toyota protecting us from ourselves.

1 hour, six min. Not bad B. I'm assuming you were in the middle of something and suddenly - "wait... someone just asked a question about a Toyota exhaust! Quick... to the PhreakMobile!"

OMG! That's frickin' funny. I was busy sleeping for most of that time.

We don't have the budget for a "bat light" so I had to improvise with my alarm clock being hooked up to the forum.
