Fragile Windshield

any suggestions if i should take it to toyota or look for someone around here that does glass repair?

If the crack has spread all the way to the edge of the glass, it'll need to be replaced. According to the glass repair company I delt with, if the crack is smaller than the size of a dollar bill and not touching the side, it can usually be repaired.

Harmon Glass did mine fairly quickly. Remember to tell them if you have the "compass in rearview mirror." It makes a difference in the glass for somereason.

If you take it to a Toyota dealer, they will usually ship the car to a glass shop to do the work, so you may be better off choosing your own, preferred glass shop. Some 9 months ago I had a couple of quotes between $200 - $250 for a new aftermarket windshield, installed. The Toyota original windshield was somwhere close to $1000. Like PhreakdOut said, if the crack is small enough, it can be repaired. You can even try to do it yourself. Autozone, CarQuest, O'Reilly, etc. all have windshield repair kits ($10 or so).

gen 1 also

Postby Sentinel » Thu Sep 15, 2005 12:43 pm

yea.. Gen 1 have "weak" windshields as well. Mine had a buncha chips in it when I bought it, and a dinky pebble caused a crack that was tiny for 2 weeks, then spread across the whole windshield in 20 minutes one day.
If you have a tiny crack, fix it before it takes the whole windshield out.

No. Neither the standard warranty, nor the extended warranty cover the windshield (unless it's a manufacturer defect).

UNBELIEVABLEEE....I come out of work and see a crack in my windshield. Its a striaght line from the right side then down, like the letter L. I know it's going to need to get replaced.I called the dealer and asked if its covered under warranty and they told me to bring it to the dealer so they can see if it's covered. My crack looks like a stress crack in the window. It's just annoying to look at!

it was like about a month after i got my car, i took my car to the dealer, for the rattling issue, and after 2,3 days of waiting, they called me and said they FOUND a crack on the window shield (who knows...)
they have replaced my window shield for free, and after that, i haven't have cracked window shield until now.
(well, i kept having the rattling issue, and took them another week for them to finally fix it.)

I took a hit to a while back, it was on the freeway so it was around 75 or 80. I saw it coming too couldnt avoid it, it was the size of a seed. It just left a lil welt on the glass, its smaller then a dime , lucky me

i like the front tint on the windshield, my bf got it on his altima and accord.Sometimes when he gets pulled over, the cop doesnt even notice or maybe just not say anything which is interesting.I wont do it cuz i dont want a ticket. I'm hoping to get a aftermarket windshield and not some crappy toyota one since we all have had problems.I had my civic for a few years and this never happened. Its seriously like a straight line about 5-6 inches then a line going down about 2 inches all in the same line.Doesnt look like a rock hit it.Its right at the end of my right side window.
