Toyota Oil Filters! Damn them!

Toyota Oil Filters! Damn them!

Postby jth877 » Sat Jan 14, 2006 9:37 am

During my first oil change I noticed that the original oil filter is made in japan and looks way different than the toyota filter I picked up at the dealership. The dealership filter is made in USA. I found out that there are 3 different "toyota" oil filters. Japanese OEM (best besides TRD), one that's made is thailand, and one made in the USA (by purolator I think). WTF?

Does anyone know of an online place that sells the japanese made filters? Bulk purchase or otherwise. If not, I think I'll get the TRD filters. It seems strange that I was told by toyota and the dealership to only use toyota oil filters when there are 3 distinctly different types out there all made by different companies! Patented drain back valve my ass.

http://trdparts4u.com/

they sell trd for 12.99 and box of 10 of regular ones for 35.99.

My friend works at lexus dealership and knows toyotas pretty well. He said the same thing that you should use toyota oil filters. I'm not really sure how they are different but that's what i heard.

I see the TRD, but the other two oil filters @ TRD4u are not the japanese made, I think those are US or thailand made. I guess I'll spring the cash to get TRD filters.

The USA one I got was 90915-YZZG1

There are also some oil filters I have seen made by Nippon. Does anyone know their quality?

Can someone who doesn't know much about the innerworkings of a car (me), see the oild filter just by looking under the hood? I get my oil changed at the dealership, but don't trust them I want to see what they are using.

Right under the front exhaust manifold/heatshield, a little bit to the left. I recommend a oil filter socket though, it's a weird place to try and get leverage by your bare hand.

OK...OK...remember, I said I don't know much about cars. What's and exhaust manifold? Really, no laughing at me :-) I just want to see if they used the cheap part or the good part.

And to JTH: I'm pretty sure that Nippon is the Japanese word for "Japan", so those could either be real, or somone using that word in thier name to advertise fakes.

NIPPON is a very well respected, large supplier of parts to the Automotive industry. There are 2 listings on eBay, and in one you can see the print on the box stating MADE IN MALAYSIA. The company I work for uses them for Diesel Engines installed on our equipment.

:-) OK, so what you are saying is that a Malaysian company is using a word that means Japan in the name of their company. Sounds like they are trying to make people think they are a Japanese company :-) :-) :-)

No what I am saying is that the parts are made in Malaysia...do you think only the US outsources and builds in other countries? NIPPON either has a plant in Malaysia or has contracted for the parts to be made for them by a company in Malaysia. There are a lot of Japanese companies with the word NIPPON in their name, and they manufacture outside of Japan as well, (including in the U.S.).

So...can anyone answer my original question about the filter? I don't know where, or what some of these parts are; so a good description would be welcomed. Thank you :-)

Filter Location: I think this already got answered. It is hard to see under the exhaust manifold so i doubt you could tell the CoO (Country of Origin) for that part.

Honestly, any Toyota branded filter is going to have passed strict quality and design requirements. I would say more so than the Puralators you'd get from AutoZone. You can trust that the dealership is not going to use cheapies on your car.

The other alternative: Change your own oil. My wife can do hers. This way you pick the oil and filter of your choice. Plus, it's a great way to start learning how to work on your car. This is usually the first thing you learn.
