HID vs. stock

HID vs. stock

Yes, I know... a lot of people here are going to rag me about this but here is my honest opinion. As far as usable light do not get HIDs, UNLESS you do a full retrofit using a genuine HID lens. I have the HID kit (not a retrofit) and the look great from outside, but from behind the wheel the stock produced more "usable" light in projecting light down the road in front of me. I, like many of you, do not like the stock color but I am not sure if any of you have tried using an H9 bulb (which is a 65 watt high beam bulb) in the H11's place. The projector lens will keep it from acting as a high beam in the way of the cutoff focus of the low beam's lens. The H9's socket can be modified very easily to fit into the H11 socket. I am going to do this myself and will post pics when I am done. Again, I know that the HIDs look better aesthetically, but functionally the light in front of the car does not project farther or appear brighter, just the side of the car does.

Yeah... Although I don't have true HID now (but I will ASAP), I just got a set of Luminics since I didn't get much performance out of SilverStars (plus I don't hear too much good things about them AND a set of "HID-look" lights doesn't look so different from my stock fogs), the range seemed lower. Seeing a connection of how they both seem to perform bad, I realigned my headlights and now it's 200% better. Just my $0.02.

*EDIT* Thanks for bringing up a dead thread from 3 years ago  ! I have a set of 4100k HIDs now 8) .

I totally agree with you.

I have been doing a ton of research on this. A great resorce is the HIDPlanet forums. What i have come up with is something similar to the problems Acura MDXs have with aftermarket HIDs. Lots of light around the car (aiming at the sidewalk) but no bright focused light in front of the car.

The fix that MDX owners swear by is modifying the housing to allow the bulb (also an H11) to sit 2mm deeper inside. I think this is the same problem we have, and I hope to do a mod sometime this weekend.

I will post results as soon as i can.

I was thinking about getting a kit, but I might just spring for a retrofit, you can get S2K projectors for under $200, and I'm sure they wouldn't be terribly difficult to mount considering we already have shrouds and projector mounts in place...no worrying about cutting reflectors or anything.

Don't get me wrong, I love the look of my HIDs. It just sucks when i speed over speedbumps in dark parking lots for the 18th time.
