URD closed loop tuning box

URD closed loop tuning box

Postby gman » Tue Nov 15, 2005 2:13 pm

Has anyone out there installed this box yet. Mine is coming and I am looking for feedback. Or can someone direct me to a truck board with a site address. The first batch they sold out of so I know there are some folks out there that have installed it.

Thanks all~

I can't really help you as I am going to install the ESC1. Unfortunately, it was mailed over 2 weeks ago and the USPS lost it. The results should be very similar though. As you know, it's just a matter of the O2 sensor type and yours will be more precise in it's control. I have read a few resposnes on customtacos.com and they liked it very much but we have to keep in mind the 3.4 had some HGLP that it helped solve too and that may have made it more worth it to them. Post here if you get it before me and get it tuned or I will post if I get it first and setup. I have everything ready and the ESC1 is easier to tune.

Friday is the install with my shop foreman at the local Toyota dealership. He is not a tuner so it is then up to me to do the rest. Since JB couldn't do this mod and exiting the community to boot, I am on my own. I will post when I am complete.

Hopefully, I'll get my replacement in the mail Friday or Saturday. Tuning your setup is more time consuming but shouldn't be too difficult if you feel comfortable with the FTC.

that's for sure more time with s/s. I am much more comfort. than I used
to be but man I always feel like it not perfect no matter what I do. (too many cells and too many conditions)
Anyway- Happy Turkey day and I will be in touch.

Cool. I know you will be just fine. I felt the same way about the SS unit myself at first till I started realizing you can eliminate your worries about certain areas becasue your car will probably never use those cells unless something really bad happens. Not likely for you. Happy Thanksgiving to you too and eat all you like :D

Ok- I've waited a long time to feel this!! It feels weird but it is so good!
It took about 2 hours to wire it, taking our time and making sure of things. Esp. since this one is the first Sol/Camry box sold. I then spent another 1.5 hours making a new program and road tuning. I will probably need that much more time to fill in blanks, check non-boosted trims (since trims in boost skew the true #s and need to be thrown out) and then retune the open loop again since the closed loop tune effects the open loop. I notice again today that once the car shifts from 2nd to 3rd and 3rd to 4th from redline/wot, the afr's are in the 10s. I need to isolate as best possible the 5.5 and 6 lb columns from 4500 rpms to redline and reduce the cell values. 1/2 to 3/4 throttle runs low 12s to high 11s and feel solid. Lastly, my water injection is still not operative. My tech did the best trouble shooting he could and still no go. I need to stop by a participating Aquamist dealer in Massachusetts and spend an hour or so in Diagonostic time and get that puppy working again. Oh and we rewired the bank#2 knock sensor pin into the #1 knock sensor (since I have throwing a po330 code for the last 3 weeks). That took merely 30 mins and saved from buying new sensors and the labor which is big bucks for that job. Hopefully the #1 bank can hold up for a while. Well that's the shite on tuning - once all this is at peace it is time to dyno again. I was unhappy with the 230whp I got back in August. I am shooting for between 240-250 since I started this over a year ago.

Well how bout you? Any of this sound familiar Paul?

Honest truth. If I had A/F ratio sensors I would dread it. Not because it's difficult but because it's kind of time consuming. I would still do it anyway though :P

I hear what your saying. Tune the new box, then go back and tune pretty much the whole FTC map again including WOT. The check it all again. What I did find is that when compared to a vehicle like a Tacoma, the Camry/Solara maps are pretty linear. In other words the cell values increase in pretty much the same increments as the rpms and map increase. There are few minor areas but from what I saw of a few Tacoma maps, they are harder to do and more time consuming. I have had good success after identifying idle(including AC idle), WOT, and decel areas. I better stop now, you can go on for a while about this stuff :)

BTW, what are your impressions so far? Worth it?

It was my 5 yr olds Bday on Saturday so no tuning and Sunday was his party so again no tuning. I finally got to go out and do some tuning tonight and I'm a little mixed on the outcome. I tuned it so when the ESC kicks in my A/F ratios go to about 12 to 12.5, then 11.7 at WOT. The transition is now seamless. No more sudden surge of power. I also noticed that I no longer have higher EGT values than I would like under closed loop boosted conditions under load. Such as going up a long hill. I probably have some very minor fine tuning to do in a few areas, like 0.1 here and there. No more. Just trying to be a perfectionist, I guess. I think this is worth it for me because of the safety issue with the higher EGT values and the seamless power to WOT. Gadget thinks I will like it even more when I drive more. He expects me to realize more torque and better driveability.

So, I think this is worth it as a final piece but I think people who choose to do this should not really expect anything phenomenal. Keep in mind I do have a 5 spd and I don't use the EBC.

I understand I have a almost 5 and 7 1/2. I have really been enjoying it! Almost never do I have to give it so much much throttle that it downshifts into 3rd. I do alot of highway driving and this really does add quite a bit of torque low in the rpms. I can climb a long hill form 65mph and run right up to 90 with a ton of pull and never leave 4th gear. I LOVE IT! Although I did have a scare tonight when leaving from dinner out. I am still running with my LM1 and I let it warm up as usual and then proceded out onto the road slowly. It felt really numb- I looked over to see me afrs in the 18s and 19s. I was freaked out and crawled to next spot I could pull over. It went away but now I have that in the back of my head. I know my low map is good and didn't f*up anywhere. Any thoughts on that Paul???

Since you were driving nice and easy and most likely in closed loop yet, I think it may have been just a blip in the sensor. Maybe some residual moisture. Now if the LM-1 you have have is still using the original sensor and it's about a year or so old and you use it all the time. It "might" be a sign the sensor is starting to go. Mine lasted about 18 months of daily use. When I used to check the Innovate board regularly, it seemed the average life of a sensor used daily on a pretty well tuned motor was about 1.5-2 years. That's why I had mine off for the last 6 months. My trims were stable and still right there so I didn't see a need to have it on all the time.

BTW, after driving the car around today for a much longer period of time I did notice that I do have much better torque in the 2-3200 rpm range. The motor pulls strongly and quickly up there then it's just a little sluggish. I think that may be part of the map I need to fine tune a little. From 3800 to redline it pulls strong and fast again. My slight trace of HGLR ping is gone and the car does pull stronger and steadier when I get lazy and just accelerate from about 1800 in 5th gear. I think Gadget is right. The more I drive and just fine tune a few areas I will be fine. I will be installing the Fidanza flywheel and Spec clutch that's been sitting in closet (forever) soon. With the light weight crankshaft pulley I installed recently, I think I will be done, for now

Good points - although my LM1 sensor is pretty new. I had my other for about 6mos and only used it about 2 of those regularly and didn't warm it up each time. Even if it were that, what I felt was real and the wbo2 confirmed it. If it was just reading wrong it wouldn't affect my afrs, it is merely a sensor and is not active. And if it is a hiccup, how can I ever know it is not going to happen again when I least expect it and under more load. That is the biggest thing I hate about this s/c Camry set up...it is not plug and play and fool proof!!
Great to hear you are loving it more and more!! With the lightened fly wheel and a more ready motor down low, time to dyno when you get it to where it is done (Yea right!) What do you think you are at??? 250-260??
