Getting some caliper paint...

Getting some caliper paint...

Postby dvdchris45 » Tue May 31, 2005 9:14 pm

So I ordered some VHT Brake caliper paint in Aluminum color. My question is this:

As far as spraying the paint goes, should I detach the calipers from the rotors to spray it (might get paint on the rotors) and if I do so, do I need to readjust bleed the brakes or anything of that sort?

Might be a noob question, but I'm picky when it comes to modding my ride and I dont wanna F it up.

It's best to remove the caliper from the rotor.

However, you do not need to disconnect it from the brake lines.
1) Remove the two bolts from the back side of the caliper.
2) Slide the caliper off the rotor. Remove the brake pads by pushing them out of their slots in the caliper. (Note which one is inboard and which is outboard.) Lay a couple thick towels over the disc and strut areas. (Newspapers are a pain so I sacrificed a couple shop towels instead.)
3) Keeping the brake line attached; degrease and thoroughly clean the caliper surface. Suspend the rotor by wire or coat hanger if needed.
4) Sand the caliper as much as possible to smooth the surface before painting. (Pick a grit at your own discretion. I used 80 grit then 150. However, since it's cast, the 150 really didn't do anything.) This helps prep the surface for better paint adheasion.
5) Do your first coat lightly. Let it dry for 15 - 30 minutes depending on humidity. (Apply in 70°F or higher ambient temp)
6) Keep applying coats allowing proper drying in between. (Relax and TAKE YOUR TIME.) It looks better after drying so don't be discouraged as you paint.
7) Press the caliper piston back into the caliper. (You can use a C-Clamp to do this, but I found it easy enough to do this by hand.) Assemble the pads back into the caliper. (Remember which one goes on the inside and which one goes on the outside? You should, unless you are replacing the pads.) Reattach the two caliper bolts and tighten. (I can't remeber the torque, but I know I applied a lot.) After assembly is completed all the way around, pump the brakes up to move the caliper pistons back to their proper positions.
8) Most importantly, take pictures and post them for your buddies on SolaraGuy.org.

Best of luck bro. Hope this helped.

Here's a pic of my caliper:

I bought my paint (red) at Walmart for less than $5.00 a can. Only needed one can. I just took the wheels off and wrapped newspaper around the area I didn't want paint. It worked just fine. My calipers look just as good as the one in the picture above.

Painted mine with silver engine enamel right on the car. I just used lots of masking tape and newspaper.

Let me clarify; the paint that I bought at Walmart was "Caliper Paint". I wouldn't risk using any other because of the high heat caused by braking. They carry white, red, yellow and blue in the automobile paint section.

Awesome! Me want! Brushed Aluminum would be great with my ride.

Hey there all. Been offline a few days.

Here's the original thread for regarding the TRD stickers on the Calipers. Enjoy!
