Only heat setting 5 works

Only heat setting 5 works

For some weird reason, my heat only works on the 5th setting so it's blasting out. About a week ago, the 4th setting was working as well but is now out. What could cause the first 4 to go out without causing the 5th one to go out as well? Thanks in advance.

I'll assume manual. For the selector, there is a resistor that controls the 4 lower speeds, usually. Very simply this resistor has an open in it and the wire from full or 5, working off of its own circuit, doesn't. So the resistor is probably bad.

Thanks for the replies guys. I know this probably sounds like a noob question, but how do I know what kind of HVAC I have? If it helps, I have a 2001 Solara, 4 cylinder engine, auto transmission. Thanks again.

I finally got around to replacing the blower motor resistor and all the heat settings finally work. It was actually a really easy fix. I am still having a problem though. The heat in the past month has been just barely warm and it is now very cold outside being winter lol. I noticed that my coolant is brown now. Could it be that the coolant just needs to be replaced? Any tips for doing this?

If you're coolant is already brown, you're heater core might be stopped up with calcium deposits/sludge from old coolant or you could have a blent door problem or a hvac control problem
OR you're heater hose on/off (not sure what its called)

I finally figured it out. All it was was a green cable that was in the back of the heater unit. It had fallen out of the clip under the dash on the drivers side so I adjusted it and put it back in the clip. It works great now. I checked there because I remembered I had pulled the heater unit out awhile back to put new bulbs in there so I could see the heater controls at night. I Good thing it was something easy and free to fix.
