Turning on Fogs without headlight

Turning on Fogs without headlight

Postby SolaraConvertable » Thu Jan 09, 2003 4:59 pm

Hi, i was wondering if anyone knew the best way to rewire the foglights to turn on even when the headlights are off. I just put HIDs in the headlight and foglights and im blinding everyone, so for normal driving around town i wanted to be able to just use the foglights.

reference the fog light problem post.

also, have your considered reaiming your lights, now that you have HID's. Why blind everyone? anyway . . . Headlights and foglights on at the same time are illegal and your asking for a ticket.

further, keep a close eye on the housing of your headlamps. HID's burn hotter than OEM lights and can over time ruin or yellow the OEM clear look.

i think 01RDSLE has some typos and misinformation, but I'm sure someone else can verify that.

i have a 2000 camry, but i'm guessing your solara is the same. the purple wire running to your foglight switch is what determines whether your foglights will come on only with your headlights. so disconnect the purple wire from your switch (be careful, and tape it up, so it won't short out on anything), then replace it with a different wire, then connect that wire to a different power source (your parking lights, for example).

i don't think it's safe to drive around at night with just your foglights, though. (and why get hids if you're not going to use them?)

01RDSLE, if driving around with headlights and foglights on is illegal, why is it set up to be used that way? :P Our system, by default, only allows us to turn on the foglights while the lowbeams are on. All other modes, off/drl/parking lights/high beams, have foglights off (even if the switch is on)

xravexboix, your right :D I meant driving around with the fogs on with highbeams.

I'm going to check the purple wire situation because I too want to drive with just the fogs on.

yup :( one of my friends got a ticket b/c she has fogs on her grand am and the cop thought her headlights were too bright to have them both on..so the cop marked it as highbeams w/ fogs and ticketed her.

:o I think HID burns cooler since it's a 35 watts instead Halogen (55 watts)
I touched the housing and it indeed has lower temp than halogen.

Hey everyone, thanks for the replies.
1. Ive never heard of getting a ticket because of headlights and foglights, with our cars the foglights turn off when you hit the highbeams.
2. I dont really know if there is a way to reaim my lights now that i have HIDs. I have the HID kit made for the H4 headlight and 9006 fog. It is a complete plug and play setup, there not from like an acura TL or maxima where you have to rig something up in order to make them fit. The HID bulbs that i have already have a little metal shield on the bulb but they are just to bright and bother other drivers. I dont think that the HIDs are really aimed up towards other drivers but its just the brightness of them. Im open to any suggestions to what i can do so they dont blind people.
3. "i don't think it's safe to drive around at night with just your foglights, though. (and why get hids if you're not going to use them?)

I dont know if you've ever seen aftermarket HIDs but they are very bright, just the foglights on will be like having two sets of headlights working so i dont think safety is a problem. I drive around the city alot where the roads are well lite so i feel that driving around with just the foglights will be enough and im sure the other drivers will appreciate it also. However, when im on the highway or something i could get the full use of both sets of HIDs.
4. Back to the topic at hand, does anyone else have any experience with this "purple wire"? Is the wire located by the switch or by the foglights. I asked my car shop and they told me there must be some type of negative trigger or something that tells the foglights that the headlights are on the allows them to work. But they dont really want to mess around with major factor wires without having some clue what to look for so thats why im asking all of you.

Thanks for the help

My (remember, it's a camry) purple wire comes from one of the DRL relays in the front of the engine compartment on the driver's side. The other end goes to the foglight switch. It's actually a positive power source, so you need to replace it with a positive supply.
