Just wanna share some pics of my in progress carputer version 2.
The biggest change this time is to replace the Alpine CDA-1006 motorized screen with 7" touchsreen monitor.
Why, you would ask, because the Alpine only take the composite RCA inputs therefore the resolution display for the computer is crappy. The new 7" touchscreen will take VGA input as well RCA (for my DVD purpose), and also has a touchscreen feature.
In this update project, I'd also drop the new screen into the double din size of the dash.

I'll take some more pic when I drop the dash into the car, and hooking up everything else.

Just wonder if anyone interested in a DIY how to install the screen into the dash board? I've taken every pictures of every steps from the beginner.

Lastly, any inputs are gladly appreciated.

Fenix, this is awesome! I'll definitely want to check this out when we get together again. I really like the way you have it built in. I don't really understand where the head unit is and where do you put CDs and DVDs? What is this called, where do you buy it and how much does it cost? Does the GPS work as a navigation system? -JoeB

Thanks John19.

JoeB, thanks.
I could go without the head unit, however, I prefer to use the DVD player insteads of the computer's dvd rom. Therefore, I will install my dvd player below the AC control where the ashtray is.
For the quick trip here and there, I will use my DVD player with my screen to play mp3, cd, vcd, dvd and am/fm. I could do all that with the computer but the booting up & down time is kinda slow, and I will mainly use the computer for GPS, ODB-2 and 2000+ mp3 songs for long distance trip.
For more detail, please pm me. I'll walk you through from a to z. If you already have a laptop, all you need is the screen and couple more items. Btw, the GPS work as a navigation system. I'm gonna use the USB GPS connects to the computer and using Microsoft Trip & Street 2004 software to navigate around.

Thanks x rave xboix,
I use those new mini EPIA computers.

Krooked Solara, in general all the touch srceen LCD monitor out there needs the computer in order to perform. Those touch srceen from Apline, Kenwood, .. are different kind though. They cost a lot more and require a brain to control.

swimshady906,
I got a really good deal in a group buy for $235 shipped. The guy went to China for vacation and brought back 20 of them for the group.

yeah, that's what i want. i just want a touch screen LCD for a headunit. would that mean that i would have to mount the receiver somewhere else?

I really like the idea, but I think I'd change a couple of things if I did it. The lower part of the LCD housing is curved outward, which looks funky and requires removing the crossbar dividing the head unit area and climate control area. Leaving the crossbar would look a lot cleaner, IMO. For the computer itself, I'd use a laptop. I would look for one with a cracked screen on ebay, since I wouldn't be using it anyway. Using a laptop would allow me to mount it temporarily in the glove box, under the passenger seat, or somewhere else. Power consumption would be low (even lower with a DC-DC adapter), it wouldn't put off much heat, and it'd be pretty quiet. If I designed the mount for the laptop correctly, it'd be easily removable so I could take it inside (for file transfer, or whatever).

Not bashing your project. It looks great. Just providing some constructive criticism. :D

Looks sooo Good! Enjoy it! You said, 2000+ MP3s because it's stored on the computers memory I'm assuming. 8)
