My Solara Build Thread (The Red One)

My Solara Build Thread (The Red One)

Postby CamryOnBronze » Fri Aug 27, 2010 11:57 am

Alright, so technically this is my wife's car right now. But that doesn't mean I can't have a little fun with it, right?!

Most of you guys know the back story on this car, but I took some of this post from a build thread on a local forum. Basically, we picked this car up about a year ago with around 93k miles on it. I bought it from a friend from Brett (YESCA) on SG that lives in St. Louis and had it shipped here for my wife to drive. When we bought it, it had a few modifications done to it- a TRD supercharger, K&N stock filter, some "Swoosh" gauges in a pod on the dash, Magnecore plug wires, a GReddy SP2 muffler welded onto the stock piping, Renova Grille, and a TRD badge on the trunk.

My wife was not a fan of buying premium gas, so we sold the supercharger kit to Tony the Tiger for his Camry. It actually wasn't as fun on the automatic trans as it was on my five speed Solara I had previously, so I wasn't too bummed about it. Not to mention the fact that we got the car for about half of the KBB value after selling the mods- Brett hooked me up! I have the 240 for going fast, so it isn't a big deal. :)

Here is how the car sits now. (These pics suck- just snapped some quick to start the thread, lol) These are the current mods that are still left from YESCA:

GReddy SP2 Muffler
K&N Drop In Filter
Renova Grille
Shaved Emblems

White balance/focus fail, lol:

I wanted a GReddy Evo 2 like I had on my Solara for a while, and the piping was leaking at the welds on the SP2 setup, so I went ahead and bought Vik's GReddy from him. I also picked up an Injen intake that he had posted up to make a little more noise. The Muffler and the intake came yesterday- the mid-pipe is still on the way:

So I cleaned the air filter tonight and polished the muffler.

My wife will be out of town over labor day weekend, so I am planning to do some maintenance on the car. I'm planning to install the catback and intake, clean the interior and engine bay a bit, change the oil, filter, and trans fluid; and put the new rear brake pads that have been sitting in the garage for two months on.

Before winter, I need to do the timing belt and water pump, since the car now has about 112k miles on it. As for future mods, Here's what I have planned:

H&R Lowering Springs (Currently on my Camry, lol)
Independent Fog Light Mod
Kaminari Lip Kit (The same as my previous Camry)
35% Tint all around
New Headlights (Stock, just want clean ones)

Eventually, this is going to become my daily driver and my wife will get a new car. I'm hoping this will go down sometime next year. If that happens, I'll probably end up with coilovers and aggressive fitting 18s on the car. :) Time will tell!

I'll end this installment with a couple snaps of my previous Solara, for those that never saw it:

DISCLAIMER: This build will go A LOT slower than my Solara/240 builds did! lol.

5-speed swap in the near future? Another reason I loved the Solara is because of your old Lara. Can't wait to see how this ones turn out. Also, one of the best colors to mod in my opinion Red, White, and Forest Green are unique to these cars.

I think I've told you before, so I'll tell you again.
The Solarad was/is my favorite Solara (other than my own).
I remember seeing it in one of the major magazines back in
the day, and I thought, "what that car is...I like." :D
Trust me, I'm a technician.

haha, nah no plans to go crazy on this car. Like I said, it was supercharged when we bought it, but it won't be again when we own it. The cost vs. what you get really wouldn't make sense to me again after owning the 240- a car that can be swapped for about the price of the TRD Supercharger and could beat my old Solara on stock boost pretty easily. I still like supercharged Solaras, though!

haha, I'm not sure where those went... I can't remember who I sold them to. I have mixed feelings about them now... I think my taste has changed in my old age, LOL. And thanks, I like the 240 a lot! :)

Thanks man! I like the red for sure... I wish it was a bit brighter, but it's cool to have something different. No 5 speed plans for me- too much work for a daily!

I should be installing the intake and exhaust this weekend. I will keep you guys posted!

^ Yeah, haha. it's still going to be a slow process unfortunately. It should be pretty cool daily driver by the time it becomes mine though. I for sure want to do tint and a kit sometime next year, but we'll see how much money the 240 sucks up this winter. :)

I forgot about this build thread... whoops!

I installed the catback and intake over Labor Day weekend, after I changed the oil- I just forgot to snap some pics. Anyway, here are couple quick shots of how it sits now:

Sounds great when you hammer on it, but it is pretty quiet. The wife likes it better than the old muffler, so everyone is happy. :) Next on the docket is the timing belt/water pump and trans fluid before the snow flies. Hoping to lower it in the spring. :) I'm also going to try to clean the engine bay in the next week or so- this should be a nice before shot:
