Passenger Axle Replacement

Welp... I think I figured out why my front passenger ABS sensor has failed. I was putting on the summer wheels and when checking out the ABS sensor I noticed that the inner CV joint boot was completely torn. That probably has something to do with the ABS sensor failing. Must have just happened too because there is no vibration, grinding, or poping coming front the axle. It still has some grease in it. So it looks like I will be replacing the axle assembly and the sensor.

NAPA and Oreilly has both new and rebuilt CV axles. Does it really matter which one I go with? Have any of you replaced the passenger CV axle before? Just wondering if its a bitch to replace.

not so mch a bitch to do its just time consuming. when your taking it off make sure to get needle nose pliers to reach all the way to the back theres a c clamp that you have to pop out before you can pull the axle out. and you either have the choice of draining the tranny or just lifting it really high from the right side to avoid spilling a lot.

and please when you get the new axle get a one piece axle a lot at of auto parts stores have the rebuilt axles and those are two piece DO NOT get those. A two piece axle is what caused the casing on my tranny to break.

How can I tell if its a two piece axle or one piece? NAPA seems to have two different styles for a automatic tranny a plug in style inboard joint and bolt on style inboard joint. Is your car an automatic? Mine is a manual and it only seems like they offer one style. Attached is the link for a manual transmission axle from NAPA and it only comes remanufactured.

I can get a brand new one from Oreilly's but I don't really notice much of a difference.

yeah i have a manual as well and we only have one axle we can use.
Here is the picture i got from the link you posted.


The part circled in red is where the two pieces meet you can see the bolts around it. The thing with this is that these bolts after a few miles tend to come loose thats what happened with me. They came loose and the axle just fell and the piece that fell was swinging around inside at 60mph + and thats what hit my transmission and broke it.

Thanks for the clarification. So does the one I attached from Oreillys look like the one piece design. From what I could tell it didn't have the bolts. It has a longer single piece body it looks like.

^yeah thats a single piece! thats the one you can use. you can see the inner boot closest to the tranny is actually hooked up still to same piece and it doesnt look like it has bolts around it. When you do purchase it just make sure you dont get a two piece. Usually if they are brand new they come one piece but as soon as you get a rebuilt one thats when they make them two piece.

ToyoSolV6, any chance you remember the socket size to take off that main nut on the end of the axle?

No problem, let me know how it turns out. is the old axle an oem toyota axle? if its still able to be salvaged i would recommend to change the boot and keep it as a spare those oem axles are expensive lol

Just started it last night for a bit. I got the bolt off last night. Hopefully Ill pull everything out tonight if I have time. Not sure yet if the axle is salvagable, but it is the original toyota axle. I may have to fix it up if it is salvage able. Ill keep you posted. BTW its 30mm socket!

Oh dang...sorry lol. I knew it was somewhere around that area. When i did the axles was when i did my tranny a month ago. But there was so much going on there at the time that i didnt remember the socket size.
