Installation help/advice for factory XM radio

Postby linmk2 » Thu Apr 12, 2007 6:23 am

I purchased a used factory xm unit for my convertible. I have found some installation instructions, but they are for the coupe. Any advice for running the wires from the trunk to the interior as to location? Any other advise would be helpful. Thanks in advance for your help.

Well, I just decided to jump in uncarted waters to just feel my way around the project since no one chimed in. I'm happy to report that everything is installed and working. Bottom line, if you want to do this project yourself, you should be able to do so and save a few bucks on installation by doing it yourself. If anyone is interested, I could post how I did it.

I'm interested to know what the text is like on the OEM HU. I have asked before, but never really got a clear answer.

Does it scroll continuously with name/artist, or do you have to hit that anoying TEXT button?

The display is the same as it is for AM/FM broadcasts. The top of the screen tells the name of the station you are listening to, the channel number, and the class of the station, for instance Jazz/Blues. Below are your six presets. It appears you can store up to 18 presets on three SAT modes. Sat 1, Sat 2, and Sat 3. To get more information, you do have to press the text key. Once displayed, the information is only allocated a small amount of space. What I've seen so far, most of the artist and title information is cut off. Only if the title and artist have a small number of letters, will it all be displayed. For instance say the song "Here's That Rainy Day" would display "Here's that Rai" Not sure why that is, because there seems to be more than enought screen space. Anyway the project was not too hard. Being a convertible, I lowered the top, which allowed me to stand up, plus you have more light. If I did it again, I could do it faster. What I learned will help me with the install of the rear view camera when I get one. Have not found a "deal" yet.

I can't believe you found a used xm unit online. I've been keeping an eye out for a few months with no luck. What unit did you install?

Aw, the text thing sucks. Why the hell would Toyota do that? I'm glad I didn't get the OEM Sirius receiver now. I'll stick with what I have and in my next car just gat nav to get a proper screen.

If they can make my $100 Sirius Sportster 4 scroll all the text, you'd think Toyota could make their OEM HU do the same. Just plain stupidity.

Shortly after purchasing my 06 in November 05, I inquired at the dealership how much it would cost to purchase and install a Toyota XM unit. The answer was a shock, $433!!! From that day on, I've watched e-Bay. Finally, a week and half ago, I spotted a used one that had not been bid too high. I sent an email to the owner and inquired about its condition. I was assured that all componets were intact and the ID # was clean. There was only one other person bidding, and I was the winner. The model is Toyota part # PT546-06051. Everything is working fine. Now my car has every option offered in the GST zone. I've been watching for a non factory option, a BEC105 or 106 rearview camera. So far no great deal to be seen. But I'm sure my careful watching will pay off someday. Plus, having installed the radio, the camera will be a piece of cake.

In regards to the text display. I do have the factory Nav system, and as stated, the text is cut off.
