XM SkiFi unit and hum/noise

Postby Jack Soulfire » Thu Nov 23, 2006 4:42 pm

I recently hooked up a SkiFi (ver. 1 w/o FM transmitter) in my lara. It's tucked away nicely in the recess under the 3 climate control knobs in the middle dash. I've hidden all of the wires and hooked it up to my aux2car to run through my factory stereo.

My problem is that I'm getting a lot of high pitched hum & whining which sounds like a grounding issue and it's driving me crazy. I have a feeling it has something to do with the power coming from the cig lighter and then running sound out of the line out headphone jack on the unit.

I haven't tried using a cassette adaptor and can't try running FM through the radio since it doesn't have a transmitter. I'd rather not use FM or cassette for sound quality issues, but anything sounds better than what I have now. Am I screwed? I just paid about $140 for a year of service and don't want to waste it.

Some sound tech advice would be greatly, greatly appreciated.

I did a little more searching and found some info that states a ground loop isolator might remedy the problem. I may try to find one tomorrow and see if it works.

I got a ground loop isolator from Radio Shack and it fixed the problem marvelously!
