Is there an easy/inexpensive way to have the 2006 factory JBL (without nav) 6 disk changer play mp3s?

it's not gonna make your cd changer play mp3's. but you'll be able to hook any audio source w/ mini stereo plug with it

Is there any way to effect this (e.g. firmware update, etc.) without changing the entire head unit?

No. You'd have to swap head units, which is insanely expensive.
