2006 Gen 2 Wiring Harness Question

Postby halbritton » Mon Jun 05, 2006 8:29 am

Installing a Jensen DVD/etc. head unit in my '06 Solara SE Convertible. I have yanked out the JBL premium head unit, and will pull out the amp tonight. My question: Does anybody have an idea where I can get a wiring harness adapter? Crutchfield doesn't have one, and neither does CC. Also, can I just go straight from the new head unit to the stock speakers? Any help would be appreciated.

Radio wiring harness:

You shouldn't have any problems running your factory speakers off your new headunit.

Take care,

One more question

Postby halbritton » Mon Jun 05, 2006 12:36 pm

This question will betray me as a dummy, but wtf? I understand from other posts that my car has a sub behind the back seat. My new head unit has an output for a sub, but it is an RCA plug. Can I connect the sub to this output directly, or do I need to go from the head unit to an amp, then to the sub? Also, the amp is digital, I think, so am I right that if an amp is needed, I cannot re-use the JBL amp?

The convertible has 6.5s in the rear with 6x9s in the front, 1.5" highs in the dash and a small subwoofer behind the rear seat. You will lose functionality of the highs in the dash and the subwoofer when you remove the amplifier behind the glove box. It would be more worth your while completely removing the high range speakers (get rid of the dead weight) and purchasing a new 8" or 10" sub, small profile box and amplifier to have your lows back rather than wasting your time and money trying to get the OEM one working again.

No problem, that's what we're all about ;-) I apologize for my brief answers, I'm currently at work.

Just to clarify and confirm, you cannot use your JBL amplifier with an aftermarket source. It is a 'digital' amp, but only in the sense that it splits the channels digitally, trimming the highs and lows off the main source and putting them out to their own channels. It's really nothing that special.

You may also want to swap out your front speakers with some 2-ways to get your highs back (otherwise it may sound a bit funky with just the midbass in the doors). The doors are pretty easy to take apart, so you shouldn't have much of an issue. In addition, I personally chose to make MDF pannels to convert my 6x9s to 6.5s for better quality sound. You may want to consider this as well (since it doesn't cost anything more really and you will already have the doors apart).

Take care,

-James

Another question

Postby halbritton » Mon Jun 05, 2006 6:15 pm

Is anybody familiar enough with the wiring harness on an '06 Gen 2 convertible to tell me whether the unused large white connector taped off behind my stock head unit is a pre-wired amp bypass or not? I can't trace the wires, and don't have a full schematic.

So far, I've been all take and no give, but I'll post some pics of my install when I'm done, and I'm happy to share my great margarita recipe if you want it.

Thanks in advance for any answer.

Reverse

Postby halbritton » Tue Jun 13, 2006 8:46 am

The head unit I have installed has a screen override for the rearview camera I installed. To use it, I need to splice into the reverse line in the gearbox switch. Anybody know how to find that wire?

I have a 2006 Gen 2 Convertible.

By the way, I've learned a lot about our car doing this project. The head unit I am installing is not "supposed" to work in my car, so I've had to do some work arounds. I'll post a parts list and some photos when I get everything buttoned up. Just in case anyone is doing some of the same things I am doing, I have installed:

Jensen VM9021TS head unit w/DVD and TV tuner
Terk XM comander
TOM TOM Go 700 w/permanent install cradle
Audiovox rear license plate camera
Ipod interface to head unit
Phone install w/bluetooth connection to head unit through the TOM TOM
PAC SWI-X Steering Wheel Radio Control Interface

I used the Metra 70-8117 Amp bypass harness (worked flawlessly), and the American International TOY964 Radio Install Kit, which I had read mixed reviews of, but it is fine.

I'm happy to pass on anything I've learned.

I got it off the web -- some company in California, but I've forgotten which one. Just do a search on the part number, and you'll find it. It was about $10.
