Does anyone know how to hardwire/tap a radar detector without a hardwire kit? the wires are getting in my way. I want to mount top of my dash. Thanks.

Two things...if you put a radar dectector on the top of your dash it limits how effective it is. Mine is hard wired and the wire runs out from the sungalsses holder. Second, if you take the cig lighter adapter a part and use an in-line fuse and tape into a hot and a ground and you're good.

are you saying that the detector is more effective higher up on the windshield, or maybe even in the garage door opener/sunglass holder?

detector wiring

Postby Sentinel » Wed Nov 30, 2005 1:51 pm

Personally, I would wire the detector to a wire that was hot only when the ignition is on. That way, there is no chance that your detector could drain your battery. It'll also turn it off when you leave the car.
Take a multi-meter and find a wire that is hot with ignition. The cig. lighter is generally only hot w/ ignitiion, and there will be a wire on the radio that is the same.

With overhead mount: My Gen 1 SLE has a garage door opener installed where the sunglass holder would be: Do Gen 2 have something similar? That would be an excellent source. You could also go to a wire running to your sunroof (if installed). Also: Vanity mirror lights, although I'm not sure if those are hot always, or only with ignition.

Yes. I have a Valentine and mine is mounted right under the rearview mirror. Every test I've read says that the higher you can get it the better the reception especially for the rear detection. Since my power cord comes out of the sunglass holder (which is where my S-AFC is) I can also thread it back in when I'm not using it.

Valentine is the best detector money can buy!

Your S-AFC is mounted up in the suglass holder? I'd love to see a pic of that.

That's the way I feel. I'll try to take a picture of that and add it to my Yahoo album.
